It can't be said enough times how disappointing it was that of all the things to change, Moffat had to change this bit of canon. But even if he did, was it really necessary to have it be followed up with Sherlock essentially rescuing Irene? Couldn't it just be that she was clever enough to come up with her own escape, fooling Mycroft's keen eyes and later sending a text to Sherlock letting him know she had indeed gotten away?
