It's ironic that when he was smaller he didn't cover his body completely but after he grew an extra 8 inches he can curl up perfectly behind the shield.

Maybe he's more flexible now that he's been Super Soldiered, and he can curl up more effectively. He'd probably have had an asthma attack from compressing himself too much.
