I am a fellow crocheter; I just learned a few months ago and have since been crocheting non-stop. Dropped stitches aren't so bad for me, but it's trying to master turning chains that I have trouble with. When I work in rows, my sides often start to slant. I'm much better working in rounds. :-D
Mat definitely would have dressed more rugged in his coureur days. I don't have his full life story worked out, but he was born in France and came to New France as an immigrant (probably after he was turned), so he might have had fancier duds before he moved. Margot is probably romanticizing it up a little, too, and conflating her history.
