So I came back and re-read this when I got your comment, and I still love it! But I've been watching/reading a lot of NCIS--I don't know if you're familiar with that? But it hit me again how similar Archie and Tony are, and how internally similar Wolfe and Gibbs are, although outwardly they are VERY different.

So I nearly laughed out loud when I got to the "Your mother is already deceased" line, because in one of the NCIS episodes Tony swears by his mother's life about something, and Gibbs says, "Your mother's dead, DiNozzo." And it seems to serve exactly the same purpose in that ep as it seems to do here--on the surface it's a prick to the balloon, a way to snark at their subordinates and get them to cut the drama. But underneath that it's a subtle reminder: Yes, I see you, I remember these things about you that are important, you don't have to work so hard to get my attention.

Although perhaps I'm reading too much into it, in both cases. :D
