...well, you happened to ask for book recommendations at a time when I'm wildly enthusiastic about a new series. So! Read the Miles Vorkosigan saga, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Start with either Shards of Honor or The Warrier's Apprentice and go from there. They're sci-fi, but more character-driven and space-opera-y than anything else. Also, the main character's superpower is the power of bullshitting his way through anything. They're awesome. Seriously awesome.

Note: Your library may have the omnibus editions of the series, in which case you want either Cordelia's Honor (for Shards of Honor) or Young Miles (the Warrier's Apprentice).
