Huh

It turns out that picking an engagement ring for a fictional character is just like picking out one in real life. Once you find the right one, no matter how many other rings you look at, they will never be the right one because they are not the right one.

...I sometimes think I'm too emotionally invested in my characters...

Oh. No. Definitely not. I may or may not have spent hours looking for the right wedding dresses.

Wedding dresses may or may not be the next stop on my list. :-)

I may or may not have looked at a bunch of houses I felt my characters would live in.

It's good fic writing, I tell you!

Of course it is. I sometimes worry what my Internet history would look like to an outsider. It's basically all blood and jewellery.

Well, I hope Sarah appreciates my effort on her behalf. Next stop: cufflinks!

I did a lot of research on chemical weapons for a fic at one point and then worried that the FBI would come after me.

I wonder how well the 'it's for fanfiction!' excuse would go down?

It was mixed together with my research on penguins, and I was prepared to show the FBI and CIA the whole story. Of course, then I was afraid I'd be charged with copyright violation.

Ha! I suppose that might be slightly better than being jailed under anti-terrorism laws? If you could find the money to pay the fines.

Well of course if you've found the right one, no other will do and I don't think it matters if it's for a character or not!

I've not done the ring thing, but I did go to a car dealership to look over a car in person, that I had no intention of buying, because I wanted to see if it fit a certain character (it did). If I'd been able to take it for a test drive, I would have done. Then there's the hours I've spent looking for clothes and other stuff too and me looking up certain buildings for sale in Cardiff that had nothing to do with anyone else's reason for being there.

I always feel comforted that whenever I post these sorts of things, everyone says 'me too!' instead of 'freak!'. It's nice to know I'm in good company. ;-)
