More Memeage!
The best days are when new character development memes arrive! Stolen from
joonscribble
Toss me some numbers and a character (OCs and AU versions welcome) and I'll answer the questions. Multiple characters welcome as well:
1. What is one thing others might find intolerable about them?
2. Do they have any annoying quirks? If so, what are they?
3. Name one or more of their bad habits.
4. Any addictions? (Food, sex, drugs/alcohol, shopping, power/control, etc.)
5. What is one thing they do that can negatively affect their relationship with friends?
6. Their romantic relationships?
7. What is the biggest mistake they’ve ever made?
8. What mistake(s) do they continue to make/have not learned from?
9. Name some of their major physical shortcomings.
10. Some of their emotional shortcomings?
11. What are their intellectual shortcomings?
12. At least one thing that they tend to overreact to.
13. In what ways might they be overly negative and/or pessimistic?
14. Is there anything they are too optimistic about?
15. How might they be ignorant or prejudiced?
16. Do they have any behaviors and/or beliefs that cannot be adequately justified?
17. When would they be too judgmental of someone or something?
18. Are they ever a pushover about something? If so, how?
19. Is there anything they refuse to budge on? What are they stubborn about?
20. What is a self-inflicted misery of theirs? (i.e. something they perpetuate themselves)

10. Some of their emotional shortcomings?
Molly is very needy in some respects. She needs a lot of reassurance, sometimes repeatedly, before she'll believe anything good about herself, and one wrong comment sends the whole house of cards crumbling down again. She's neurotic, and worries quietly, until the problems become out of proportion to the situation, and are much harder to deal with than if she'd addressed them sooner. She doesn't consider herself worthy of respect, and so only occasionally has the courage to demand it. However, she does it magnificently when she does.
15. How might they be ignorant or prejudiced?
In general, Molly is a very tolerant person. In her profession, she meets all sorts of people (granted, they're often dead, but that doesn't make them any less of a person), and jumping to conclusions or being prejudiced just isn't good practice. Her prejudices mostly are through casual stereotyping, such as East Asians being good at Math or homosexual men being fashion savvy or Polish people being builders. Because she works a lot of night shifts, she does also have a wariness of men on the street at night, with a little extra emphasis on Afro-Caribbean men. She's aware that this is unfair, but she's been drilled very heavily on personal safety.
17. When would they be too judgmental of someone or something?
She has tendency to view woman who are more sexually comfortable than her as 'loose' and would definitely consider someone with multiple sexual partners concurrently to be a 'skank' or 'manwhore'. This probably stems from her own insecurities of appearing too desperate and being uncomfortable with dressing feminine for fear of it not being very feminist of her.
Merlin I-Don't-Think-He-Has-A-Last-Name
3. Name one or more of their bad habits.
Sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong, jumping to conclusions, not listening to dragons when they give reasonable advice, not listening to Gaius when he gives reasonable advice, dropping branches on people's heads. Also, according to Arthur, he spends far too much time in the tavern. And he bites his nails.
11. What are their intellectual shortcomings?
Basically everything, the man is an idiot. Merlin has trouble with details. He sees only the long run and the big picture, and misses the steps in between. He's also not terribly creative, he tends to rely on the same old tricks that have worked (or haven't worked) before. He was not raised to be bright, he was raised to work hard, and he has all the educational gaps that a peasant might have. Which means he can wash clothes and cook, but is sort of rubbish at complex math, though he reads very well. Mostly because Hunith made sure he could.20. What is a self-inflicted misery of theirs? (i.e. something they perpetuate themselves)
Keeping his magic a secret. Granted, it's to save his life, but in doing so, he alienates people or makes them think he's an idiot. Revealing to Morgana he had magic might have kept her from going over the edge, if she thought she had an ally in him. He also takes on more responsibility than is probably necessary in terms of keeping people alive and safe, though to be fair, he does have a dragon yelling at him about it all the time.

Merlin has trouble with details.
YYEeaaahhh...Merlin, I love you but I could write a three volume book series about how you made bad choices.
Great answers!

Thanks! I try not to make my character too perfect, but it's hard sometimes. They feel like your babies a little. I have to work at it. Which is why I like these memes.

Wait, wasn't that basically the show? A five series television show about how Merlin made bad choices? I think that was the show I was watching... :-D

He made a COUPLE of good choices. Sort of. Well...maybe not good ones but not necessarily bad ones. He just made choices. Like...deciding to eat some bread. That was a neutral choice.

I'm now trying to think of a good choice Merlin made, and I literally can't think of one. Everything he did resulted in shit happening. If he hadn't come to Camelot, everyone would still be alive. Except all the dead sorcerers, of course. But hell, that sort of happened anyway.
no subject
Hm. Now that you mention it, this entire series if basically Merlin trying to fix his first mistake of coming to Camelot at the start of the series. So even when he saves lives, it's mainly because he put them in danger in the first place as it's just one long chain reaction from Merlin stepping foot onto Camelot. Huh.

So, we can basically blame Hunith, then. It was her idea to send him there. Except I love Hunith, so I won't blame her. Hunith is awesome. Let's blame the dragon. It was him who got Merlin all gung-ho about saving Arthur's life all the time.
In case you still need destressification, here's Demira and Nemi (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/AWanderingMinstrel/Photo%20Manip/ScienceBros.png) hanging out.

Awwww!!! Nemi looks either really happy or super annoyed. I'll go with the former.

She's happy, yes. I have yet to see a sad Qinling panda. She's probably laughing at an inappropriate joke Tony just told, and Demira's looking smug about it, all 'yeah, that's my human'.

Hahahaha! I can totally that and Issie just sort of huffing a bit in disapproval.

Also, I want to write a story about Steve knitting, because I bet he learned to knit before the serum to help the war effort out because he couldn't fight, but he could knit socks for the soldiers.
Annnnd...that's my brain this morning! Thanks for tuning in.

No, it doesn't get addressed but it's a great fic idea! Actually, in Cap 2, if it wasn't for the fact that others are talking about Steve being a man out of his time, I really wouldn't guess he's from the 40s based on his behavior or language.

Aw, Steve. My head is still in the daemon world so I can imagine Issie helpfully chasing after the balls of yarn that roll away from him.

He's super smart, so maybe he can adapt quickly. I'm sure everyone around him tries to help him out. He's probably a bit better off than someone from Victorian times. The 1940's had cars and phones and electricity, it's just we use them differently now.

Aww!
Ascii steals balls of wool and collects them if you don't watch her.
I just have this image of skinny!Steve sitting crossed legged on his bed, with his tongue peeking out as he tries to learn the pattern. Or maybe going to a Red Cross meeting with a bunch of woman and children, who all think he's sort of sweet for being there, but he doesn't notice because he's Steve.

I think Steve's ability to adapt is both a benefit and the crux of his problems. He's resilient and quick enough to adapt practically to his environment which has given the illusion that he's fine when he's struggling emotionally. It makes sense to me that as a soldier you have to prioritize the practical stuff first but then rather than tackle the emotional stuff, that all gets sidelined because technically on a day to day basis, you're fine.

When I lived with a cat, she used to build herself little forts with balls of yarn my roommate had lying around. You look up and she's asleep, circled by a ring of yarn balls.

I know everyone was super impressed by Chris Evans' physique as post-serum Steve (and yes, it is totally impressive) but I really liked pre-serum Steve and kind of miss him. He was so determined and noble. He was probably getting people who liked him to be better people way before he became big by just being himself.

See, this is why I don't understand people saying that Cap is a boring character. He's a good guy, yes, but he has levels just like any other character, even if it isn't necessarily as much of a struggle for him to do the 'right' thing. He's no less complex for not being anti-hero.

The very first day we brought Ascii home, the firs thing she did was steal Mum's sock wool from her knitting basket, and put it in her kennel. The previous owner said 'she collects things', and we didn't know what that meant, but she literally just picks things up and takes them somewhere else. One day, I left the door to the my room open, and while I was having a bath, she took every stuffed animal and put it in a pile in the living room. She didn't chew or destroy them, she just collected them. I love Scotties, they are so freakin' weird.

I totally agree with this. Steve Rogers was awesome before he became Captain America. As a person who has dealt with a lot of chronic illness, I find his determination very endearing.

I think people tend to forget the amount of crap Steve's had to go through because he's not constantly angsting about it in the ways we're used to seeing male characters angst. Steve doesn't complain or show outwardly how much things get to him which makes sense given his childhood of having to weather chronic illnesses. In some ways, particularly after Cap 2, I find Steve the most interesting Avenger because he's an contradictory mix of resilient and completely depressed.

Maybe she's an interior decorator at heart. Like, the minute she enters a room she's like, "These dolls look better on the floor. Really draws the eye. I'll just arrange them here."

Erskine chose well. Steve was the right person to give that amount of power to because he didn't change where it counted.

And we don't see any much of him before the transformation, when he was really struggling. We see more of him after the serum, when everything comes easily to him.

Hehe! 'Yes, this earplug is a nice green, I think I'll put it next to the wall in the front hall and they're realize they really should change that paint colour'. :-D
I"m off for a nap. Laters!

Well, sort of. It's like he got all the tools but crappy things continued to happen regardless. Poor Steve. He barely had time to enjoy being able to run without dying before serious shit went down.
Have a good nap!
