Daemon Meme

Combining my two favourite things: character development memes and daemons. Thought it might jump start my word fairies.

Give me the name of a character and I'll tell you the following about their daemon:

Animal:
Name:
Nickname:
Major Personality Traits:
How he/she sleeps:
How he/she travels with his/her human:
What he/she does when his/her human is at rest:
Favourite forms before he/she settled:
What his/her voice sounds like:

I can probably come up with a daemon if it's for a character I haven't yet given one to. Feel free to ask for more than one character.

Benton Fraiser :)

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Animal: Beaver
Name: Tannarak (Inuit word meaning 'grandaughter of the tundra')
Nickname: Tan
Major Personality Traits: Tan is a forthright daemon, with a great sense of justice, and is quick to give an opinion when something happens that she feels to be 'wrong'. She's very nervous of the city, and wishes even more than Fraser that they could go home, though she does dearly love the friends Fraser has made. She and Dief are super best buddies, and Fraser often has to correct which one is the daemon and which the pet (Americans seem surprisingly willing to assume that a Canadian might have a pet beaver). She can be a bit stuffy, and often misses the point, but is very kind-hearted, and will always do her best to help out.
How he/she sleeps: Tan usually lies parallel to Fraser, with her paws pillowed under her head. Sometimes she puts her tail under Fraser's arm if it's cold.
How he/she travels with his/her human: If Fraser is just walking around, she's content to waddle, but since he often is running and jumping off of things, he's very good about sticking her under his arm so she can keep up.
What he/she does when his/her human is at rest: Fraser is not very often at rest, but when he does decide to sit down, she usually sits on his feet. She has a bad habit of chewing or licking things not appropriate to chew or lick.
Favourite forms before he/she settled: Tan was most often a fisher when she was little, but she also liked to be a seal, or a caribou. She's slightly disappointed she didn't end up being something a little more fierce.
What his/her voice sounds like: Tan has very proper diction, though her Canadian accent is a bit stronger than Fraser's. Her voice is quite deep, and she's very deadpan, though it's hard to tell if she's serious or just pretending to be.

I love that her name is Inuit. And that she's often mistaken as a pet instead of his daemon. I love this headcanon you've built for her and Ben, I can totally see it.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It was fun. I feel I should say, for accuracy's sake, that the original spelling is Tanaraq. Inuit language spellings are a bit complicated to English eyes. :-)

Following along with the Due South theme, can I get Ray Kowalski? And perhaps Dench!M?

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh,gosh, everyone's making me think tonight! Certainly, my dear. I'll get back to you in the morning, I shall have to think on these. :D

M

Animal: Orchid Mantis
Name: Kresimr (Slavic, meaning 'to spark peace'), most people do not know this name and he's generally referred to as 'M's daemon' by MI-6, or by the security call-sign assigned to him, which is 'Pater'.
Nickname: Kres
Major Personality Traits: Kres is rather a stubborn daemon, and he and M are often at odds with each other about what needs to be done in certain situations. He prefers whatever methods invoke the least amount of damage, M is more aware that sometimes you have to do what is necessary. He has a regal bearing, and a stern countenance, but ultimately has a good sense of humour, and cares very deeply. He tends to be very wry, and only those who know him well know when he's being sarcastic and when he's being serious.
How he/she sleeps: Because he's a bit small and fragile, Kres sleeps on the bedside table, for fear of being squashed if he's in the bed. When M is having trouble falling asleep, she rests her hand on the table, and he tickles her fingers with his antennae. When M's husband was alive, he would sleep on top of his daemon, on the floor next to the bed.
How he/she travels with his/her human: When roaming around MI-6 or M's home, he generally clings to a brooch or other piece of jewellery M is sporting, or sits in a pocket. In pubic, MI-6 is very worried about him being hurt, so he has to reside in a sort of bulletproof box that hangs around M's neck. He calls it his 'safety coffin'.
What he/she does when his/her human is at rest: Most people who visit M in her office will find Kres sitting on her desk, staring at him, his antennae twitching and his head cocked to the side. Most people will report that they find this unsettling. At home, Kres tends to sit on the back of her hand, on a ring, often her wedding rings.
Favourite forms before he/she settled: Kres's favourite form was a jewelled beetle when he was a child, but he often turned into a sandcat when M was playing, and an owl when she was feeling curious.
What his/her voice sounds like: A gentle, regal, gravelly purr. Jeremy Irons-like.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I just google imaged orchid mantis. I find them very pretty even as my insect phobia makes me shudder a little. Which I guess is sort of M in many ways.

he has to reside in a sort of bulletproof box that hangs around M's neck. He calls it his 'safety coffin'.

Hahaha! I find this wonderfully practical but also that it must take some dignity away from Kres. I can imagine him swinging back and forth and being very irritated by it.

A gentle, regal, gravelly purr. Jeremy Irons-like.

So perfect!

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Which I guess is sort of M in many ways.

I chose them because of the elegance of them, and the fact they hide in plain sight. Also, when threatened, they stand their ground, which is M. She always seemed like an insect person to me. I read a Bond fic once where here daemon's form was never mentioned, but it was always an insect in my mind.

I can imagine him swinging back and forth and being very irritated by it.

Kres: I hope none of the agent's daemons see me like this.
M: It's for your own safety.
Kres: That's easy for you to say, my dear, you aren't in a specimen jar.

I had a super hard time with this one for some reason, and my biggest justification for my choice is 'I can picture CKR talking to it'.

Ray Kowalski

Animal: Fennec fox
Name: Dilara (Turkish, meaning 'lover')
Nickname: Dil, Dilly when she was younger, but she decided Dil was cooler when she grew up. Ray still calls her Dilly sometimes.
Major Personality Traits: Dil is a mildly hyper daemon, borne out of nervousness more than energy. She speaks quickly, and not always accurately, and moves in quick, short bursts. She's rather cuddly, and playful (she likes to run around Tannarak and see if she can finally get her to snap), but she has a very strong sense of when the time to act is, and will usually be the one running ahead, dragging Ray into action behind her. Because of this, she's sometimes considered 'brave', but she doesn't really think of herself like that. She's quite sensitive at heart, and would be very happy to be at home with someone she loves than out partying. Despite Ray's sarcastic demeanour, Dil speaks more genuinely and without as much bluster. Though she is quick to point out when he's done something stupid.
How he/she sleeps: Dil sleeps curled up next to Ray, in the crook of his arm, with her tail over her nose. When she still lived with Stella, she put her tail over Stella's daemon's nose, which wasn't always appreciated.
How he/she travels with his/her human: Dil takes about three steps for every one of Ray's, circling around him and between his legs, on the lookout for...clues, and danger, and...stuff.
What he/she does when his/her human is at rest: Dil is usually on Ray's desk, listening to Fraser with a look of confusion on her face. She sits pressed up to his thigh on the couch at home, with her chin over his knee.
Favourite forms before he/she settled: Dil loved to change forms when she was little, and didn't spend a whole lot of time in one form over another. She liked trying out different forms, more than she liked being that form. Rabbits, lionesses, and mankin birds were the ones she returned to most often. Manakin bird usually at dance class.
What his/her voice sounds like: Somewhat high, fast-paced, with a tendency to trip over words or confuse them. Ray usually knows what she's means, so she's never really learned to take her time to articulate properly.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to hear this one gave you some trouble. But for what it's worth, the results are great!

I adore Fennec foxes and I can totally see CKR holding one and talking to her.

Despite Ray's sarcastic demeanour, Dil speaks more genuinely and without as much bluster.

Awwww! Yeah, this is Ray's soul, alright.

Dil takes about three steps for every one of Ray's, circling around him and between his legs, on the lookout for...clues, and danger, and...stuff.

Yeah, this description reads like something Ray would actually say.

Fraser: Ray, what are you doing?
Ray: I'm on the lookout for...clues, and danger, and...stuff...

I really like the idea of Dilly never really learning to articulate properly because Ray always knew what she meant. That feels so right for someone like Ray who's a little off but okay with that.

Thanks for doing these! As a token of appreciation, have some animal friends! Here, here, and here!

Sorry to hear this one gave you some trouble. But for what it's worth, the results are great!

Thank you! I think it was mostly just that I had to remind myself what RayK's character was like, and not just how he was in my head, since it's been so long. I couldn't find any traits that felt animal-like enough to connect him to one, so I went by more feel of the animal and how it moved. this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzHXZaAuafI) influenced me a lot, because I felt like fennec foxes are constantly going 'ooh, what's that? That looks--oh my god, scary!--no, it's totally okay', and that seemed Ray like to me. Donutsweeper chose a fennec for her Sherlock's daemon, and since they always seem to be into something, I can see why. This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6yIgG6sw_k) is basically BC's interpretation of Sherlock on the chase.

Thanks for doing these! As a token of appreciation, have some animal friends!

Thanks for making my brain work! It was fun. And yay for animal friends! I shall put them on my pinboard (http://www.pinterest.com/Origamibard/animal-friends/).

That last one looks like a parent daemon landing on a child daemon. "Are you okay? I was so worried! I told you not to do that. Your mother is very concerned!"

That last one looks like a parent daemon landing on a child daemon. "Are you okay? I was so worried! I told you not to do that. Your mother is very concerned!"

That's exactly what I was thinking! That butterfly is totally a parent daemon. And obviously the baby tiger is a child daemon.

Wow, fennec foxes are hyper. Makes sense but wow.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
And obviously the baby tiger is a child daemon.

The child daemon is seriously regretting his actions at the moment.

Wow, fennec foxes are hyper. Makes sense but wow.

My impression is that they're sort of like cat dogs, at least when kept as pets. I'm not sure about in the wild, but in captivity they seem to be very playful and busy, unless they're being super duper mellow. I've been watching youtube videos of one in particular and he reminds me very much of Acii--super busy if gets wound up, but mostly just very curious and always thinking about something.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
The one with the cat and fox, I feel, is basically a child daemon waking up the parent on Christmas day. "It's Christmas! Presents! Presents time! Mom! Mom! Presents? Are you up? Are you up for presents?"

The child daemon is seriously regretting his actions at the moment.

I feel this is basically the story of Tony's daemon and his parents' daemons. Especially Maria's.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
"It's Christmas! Presents! Presents time! Mom! Mom! Presents? Are you up? Are you up for presents?"

Haha!

"Mom. Mom. Can I open my stocking? Mom! Santa's daemon came. DId you see? She brought presents. Terpsichore said she didn't exist, but she must because look at the presents. MOM!"

I feel this is basically the story of Tony's daemon and his parents' daemons. Especially Maria's.

Dora's daemon commiserates. He had three Tonys to raise, btw.

Speaking of Maria, I was listening to some Broadway stuff and looking up some stuff in relation to that, and Donna Murphy (http://37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0hq802U4L1qgvv6oo1_500.png) sort of looks like my mental image of an older Maria.

Ooh, that's a good one! I don't have a mental image of Maria just yet. I did, however, have a mental image of Tomor and Mim which then google images realized for me.

Howard and Dejeni had a massive pool built into their house where Tomor can take swims. I liked the idea of Demira joining him in otter form when she was little and falling asleep on his stomach.

Gsssh! Oh, that's very sweet! And Tony asleep in Maria's arms by the side of the pool, presumably. Congrats on managing to have some fluff. I'm so proud of you!

I had a couple of daemon-related gifs I found, one being Makena (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/321866704592401171/) doing the pool drill during Ipswich. It's a corgi, but Valhund's are basically wolf corgis anyway.

The other one was this one (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/321866704592401175/), which made me think of Dejeni working on something and being all 'hi, I need this for science, bye'.

Yup! Howard and Dejeni can walk in on them napping.

Dejeni: I feel warm...and light. Do you feel like that? It's like when we got the flying car working for a whole 10 minutes. Only about 5 times more. Is it going to feel like this when we get the car actually working for good?

I'm sort of trying to kid!fic with Tony in the daemon-verse. I keep having to remind myself what wasn't around in the 70s.

I love the cats in the 2nd video. They're both like, "What the hell, man?! We were eating that!"

Aww.

Dejeni: Are these...feelings? I...sort of like--oh, I just had a great idea about how to fix the rotor on the personal helicopter...

I feel like Siger and Dora and Howard Maria should get Mycroft and Tony together for a playdate or something.

I'm sort of trying to kid!fic with Tony in the daemon-verse. I keep having to remind myself what wasn't around in the 70s.

Yeah, I have to do research on 80's England whenever I'm writing kid!fic for the Trio verse. Fortunately, there are people who are like 'I think I'll make a whole webpage devoted to what trains were like in the 1980's in England'. My knowledge of computers back then is very weak, too, so I'm like 'can this even do what baby!Q is asking to do?'. 'Were there laptops when Q was ten? Would he have been crushed by it?"

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 02:57 am (UTC)(link)

It would give Mycroft some early lessons on how to deal with Sherlock.

Fortunately, there are people who are like 'I think I'll make a whole webpage devoted to what trains were like in the 1980's in England'.

Good ol' internet. It rarely lets you down!

I'm just picturing them running into each other as adults.

Tony: Wait, the guy running Britain is the fat kid who used to try to organize my tools by purpose and color?
Mycroft: Are you seriously suggesting that the hyperactive gamin who kept breaking my toys to salvage them for parts is some sort of superhero?

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:16 am (UTC)(link)

Tony: Wait, the guy running Britain is the fat kid who used to try to organize my tools by purpose and color?
Mycroft: Are you seriously suggesting that the hyperactive gamin who kept breaking my toys to salvage them for parts is some sort of superhero?

HAHAHAHA!! It's like both their worlds stopped making any sort of sense. I can see the Avengers needing to come to England on some sort of mission and Tony in his Iron Man suit having an awkward reunion with Mycroft.

Mycroft: The outfit aligns with my memories of you as a child at least.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I'm just picturing Tony trying to look dignified and casual in full Iron Man outfit in Mycroft's medieval office. Just, like, leaning on the mantelpiece and knocking over a priceless artifact.

Tony: I'll pay for that.
Mycroft: Yes, that's rather familiar too.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can't tell if Mycroft would approve of the Avengers or find them all individually irritating in their own ways. I'm guessing the latter because Mycroft probably finds the world about 80% irritating.

If Tony, Bruce and Q ever decided to truly team up, the world is probably doomed.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:30 am (UTC)(link)

He'd probably approve of Tash, because at least she's efficient.

If Tony, Bruce and Q ever decided to truly team up, the world is probably doomed

Tony: God, your parents made more of you?
Q: Your parents must not have been brave enough to try again after they'd seen what they'd wrought on the first attempt.
Tony: *big grin* You can come and play with us.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Tony would be thrilled that Q is basically the human form of Jarvis. Computer brain and all the snark.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Tony would be thrilled that Q is basically the human form of Jarvis. Computer brain and all the snark.

And patient enough to deal with him because Q has lived with Sherlock all his life, and he can totally handle obnoxious geniuses.

I'm picturing Bond there, too, to be on Q's security detail, and just wandering around going 'there's a guy here who can shoot missiles from his arm and a computer who at least 99% alive, what are they fucking expecting me to do if someone attacks?'.

Is it sad that I can justify this all working in my head? Because Siger might have been called into code break for Shield at some point, and Mycroft and Tony are probably the same age, and...stuff.

I still maintain Sherlock is the easiest fandom to crossover.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:41 am (UTC)(link)

Craig!Bond would communicate all this with an eye twitch.

Is it sad that I can justify this all working in my head?

Crossovers are always my kryptonite so I am in no position to judge. Only sit here with my hands on my cheeks and smile.

I still maintain Sherlock is the easiest fandom to crossover.

It's a VERY easy fandom to cross. Torchwood used to be my easiest fandom crossover when I still did Torchwood fic. Anything involving international levels of action and espionage and crossovers are simple!

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Craig!Bond would communicate all this with an eye twitch.

So far the best part of writing daemon!fic with Bond is at least there is someone there to articulate his thoughts, and you don't have to have him being all silent and brooding. He can brood with his soul.

I always find characters get a bit more warm in daemon!fic. Maybe just the influence of cuddly animal friends.

Only sit here with my hands on my cheeks and smile.

I"m just thinking, Howard might invite Siger over to work with SHIELD, and maybe Dora decides going with him would be educational, and Maria invites her over to hang out since she doesn't know anyone in America and...bam! Crossover fic.

I was going to mention, because it may be relevant to your interests, there is a tie-in comic for the Iron Man films that claims that JARVIS is based on the personality of the Starks' English Butler, Edwin Jarvis, who was around when Tony growing up, and who stood in as pseudo-dad for Tony. Sort of like his Alfred (which was the reason they changed him to an AI for the film, incidentally, because they thought people would accuse him of a being a rip-off). I don't know if that helps or hinders you, but I don't consider tie-ins canon, so you can ignore it if it doesn't work, or use it if it would be helpful.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe just the influence of cuddly animal friends.

It makes us all fluffier.

I thought the original comics!Jarvis was indeed a person who was a butler. I just didn't know it was an English butler.

I just did a quick Google. It says Jarvis was a RAF pilot in WWII who moved to America after the war and started working for the Starks. I think he's meant to be play on Jeeves.

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I guess British butlers were all the rage back then.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
*dons History Nerd glasses*

I could see America being the place to go for a man trained to be a British butler post-WWII. The class system in England broke down post WWI and was even worse post-WWII, and many houses couldn't afford to keep servants any more. A lot of men who had been trained for what was a very prestigious job back then found themselves digging ditches to make money. Americans would have found the notion of British staff very fancy, especially the nouveau riche who were trying to prove they were just as genteel. If you had your heart set on buttling, America might be the place to go.

*takes off History Nerd glasses, shakes out hair*

[identity profile] joonscribble.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
That makes tons of sense. I can see the Starks of the comics picking up one because, well, they're Starks.

I sort of gave computer!Jarvis a different origins story for my Tony kid!fic in the daemon-verse. I liked the idea of Jarvis sort of "growing up" along side Tony who built him slowly over the years.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-08-03 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, 'picking one up' sounds like there's a bunch f British butlers at the Humane Society and the Starks just came in and adopted one.

I liked the idea of Jarvis sort of "growing up" along side Tony who built him slowly over the years.

Aww! I like that far better, to be honest. And it makes sense that Jarvis is so advance as to be almost sentient now, if Tony has been working on him that long and tweaking the flaws.
