AGH! Was that flicker not fantastic? I seriously had all the love for that movie.

It was! I love the direction they've taken the Bond films in since Craig took over as Bond. Just ludicrous enough, with a strong plot and excellent acting and emotional involvement. I love the Bond franchise, but these feel like the best of both worlds. Lots of action and a good deal of heart.

What I liked about it was not only backstory on Bond, but how the whole movie was basically about violence against women, and how Bond will not stand for it. Yeah, it was an action flick, but it also had what I thought was a really powerful message.

I had seen a few things on tumblr (a land of angry, angry people) about it being a very sexist movie, and misogynistic in its portrayal of the women involved, and I sort of didn't see that at all. I thought all three main women in the story were strong in their own way. Especially in comparison to some of the women we've seen Bond around over the years. It's a step forward at least.

I'm with you. And I like your impression of tumblr; that, combined with their complete disregard for the Fourth Wall, is why I keep very securely to my little fiefdom on lj and AO3.

LJ is full of relatively sane people, and I will make my home here forever. Tumblr is a scary place if you wander around too far, but you can usually make a nice little corner for yourself, if you build a good security system and an bunker for emergency purposes. It's just never a good idea to walk around in any tag of any sort. There will always be someone there spreading hate about the thing you like that will either make you irrationally angry, or ashamed for liking it in the first place.

LJ is a much kinder place.

I still haven't seen it (no money to buy the DVD yet and as I *want* to buy the dvd - actually, I want to buy the 3 film box set - I don't want to download it, though I may yet cave). Hasn't stopped me *reading* crossovers though...

You do know that telling yourself not to write crossovers only makes it more likely that you will because they'll be insidious and sneak up on you - of course they will, James Bond is a spy after all, sneaking comes naturally for that verse.

Oh and if you do write them, I can guarantee I'll read them. :)

It is very good when you get around to seeing it. One of the best, I think, though I do have a very large soft spot for Casino Royale still.

Seriously, when Q first appeared my first thought was, "Hello, Sherlock's little brother." And then I went on Tumblr and IT WAS ALL OVER. It's the hair, I tell you. The freakishly similar hair.

Oh and the fact that he's a genius (Sherlock-ish) with perhaps some ideas of or at least some fantasies of world domination. As in he knows he can do it if he tried (Mycroft-ish).

Maybe if they cut his hair right. Not as floppy/curly. More straight and short, or long? Cumberbatch has never had the same hair twice, so I bet they could find something to do with it. 'Twas! Also 'Sheridan', I believe. And Sherrinford is the name the scholars give to the mythical older brother who apparently must exist, because someone has to be the country squire seat if Mycroft and Sherlock are both in London. I could never get together enough of a plot to write a full crossover fic, but I just had these random snippets in my head of Sherlock calling up Q to try and get help in hacking into Mycroft's email because he's been trying for weeks while Mycroft was on the other line asking Q to help him put up an impenetrable firewall because someone's been trying to hack his email. Meanwhile Q reminds them he has an actual job that he needs to be getting on with.

Oh, I see. My headcanon simply has Q not mentioned due to security issues, not because of estrangement. Or even because Sherlock doesn't realize he hasn't mentioned him, because, 'cases, John!'. I don't know if he would mention Mycroft if he wasn't so, er, 'involved' with Sherlock's life.

I can totally see that. Also for whatever reason, both Sherlock and Q have a similar sense of humor. At least to me. So I can see them getting on in that regard. At least when they're not trying to one up each other with Sherlock deducing embarrassing things and Q hijacking Sherlock's website.

As an aside, I'm rather amused that Ben Whishaw has admitted that he does not own a computer himself. I'm sort of skeptical of that claim but I can do commend his attempts on screen to stare at computers like he knows what he's doing and Mendes as a director deciding not to give too many close ups of him typing.

There seems to be a generation of people who missed out on computers. Like, the younger generation grew-up on them, and the older generation has learned, but the middle generation seems a bit computer phobic. I've seen a lot of people in their thirties who claim to have no clue how computers work.

But kudos indeed to everyone who made it work. To be fair, though, computing in film is just typing really fast. I've often wondered what sort of gibberish would actually appear if the keys they were hitting showed up on the screen.

I always felt like it was people in their 40s to 50s who were a bit computer-phobic. I'm 32 and just about everyone I know around my age is pretty much dependent on their computers. But perhaps this says more about the people I choose to hang out with. At this point trying to write stuff by hand for me is a monumental challenge.

After listening to interviews with Whishaw, I can sort of believe he'd be a bit techno-phobic. He did admit he couldn't even figure out how to open up the box that held the Omega watch the Skyfall people gave him.

My brother and I were always very computer literate because my father was interested in computers, so we had them right since I was about four or five, so...very early 90's. It's also why everyone in my family uses the mouse with their left hands--my father is left handed and he taught us, so none of us can use it with our right hands now. But I do know I was in the minority growing up, though perhaps not now. I imagine some people just never joined the bandwagon.

This is now getting off the topic of Skyfall but I'm halfway convinced that if computers never came into being, I would have barely made it through college. Certainly I would not have gone to grad school. I found doing writing assignments as a child absolute agony with my hand constantly cramping up and my handwriting being impossible to read.

Now that I'm doing neurological testing, I realize I probably have mild proprioception issues where writing by hand is much more strenuous for me than the average person.

Anyway, Skyfall has gotten me back on the Bond bandwagon. I hope the next film is as entertaining. It was so wonderfully classic!Bond in many ways with the newer elements seamlessly woven in.

I had the same problems as a kid. My handwriting still looks like a six year old's, though I don't know if it would have improved if I hadn't had the computer to use and been forced to write. I write by hand at night before bed, and it's awful looking. I have a bad habit of combining letters and therefore losing one of them, like hooking a g on the bottom of an n and losing the n. I loathed being forced to write in school.

I've always been a huge Bond fan, and a bit ashamed of it consideration how angry I should be at its portrayal of women. I just like hot guys being heroic. I've really loved the new direction of the films, though. Nice nods to the past, but substance too, and not just cool gadgets. I loved Skyfall, and I hope the follow-ups keep up the trend. I'm a big fan of Craig-as-Bond.

Me too! I'm waffling on whether I can make both 'verse work together. Without spoiling anything, it would take a bit of hand waving on my part in regards to Q and M and their relationship or lack thereof in the film, but I think I might be able to make it work...

If you're wanting Q as a 'lost' Holmes brother, M doesn't have to be his 'mummy' too - he can always be a half brother (which is how most people introduce Martin Crieff in Cabin Pressure crossovers).

I don't think I want him 'lost', though. I think just unmentioned on screen. My own headcanon for Sherlock has him having a relatively happy, if eccentric childhood, so I'm not sure how much drama I want to insert. I do think I can almost make it work if I say that M has always been very careful that none of her children have ever been associated with her for safety reasons, and even when the boys joined the government, they all still act like they aren't related. I don't think that's too far-fetched. The main problem is that if I make M Q's mum, it brings down quite a heavy burden on Q that I'm not sure if I want to do.
