If you're wanting Q as a 'lost' Holmes brother, M doesn't have to be his 'mummy' too - he can always be a half brother (which is how most people introduce Martin Crieff in Cabin Pressure crossovers).

I don't think I want him 'lost', though. I think just unmentioned on screen. My own headcanon for Sherlock has him having a relatively happy, if eccentric childhood, so I'm not sure how much drama I want to insert. I do think I can almost make it work if I say that M has always been very careful that none of her children have ever been associated with her for safety reasons, and even when the boys joined the government, they all still act like they aren't related. I don't think that's too far-fetched. The main problem is that if I make M Q's mum, it brings down quite a heavy burden on Q that I'm not sure if I want to do.
