But surely he'd feel guilt-ridden regardless of whether or not M was actually Mummy or a stepmother or the head of M16?

You're right about that. I do think there would be more angst in killing your mother than killing you boss, though.

Just brainstorming here, but maybe a way to lessen the guilt might be that someone else (Mycroft perhaps? Or someone evil?) misled Q/sabotaged the system/gave him the orders to place the trail of markers to M?

Hmmm. That's a possibility, but IIRC, Bond gives the orders directly to Q by phone. I don't know if anyone could interfere with that. I could justify it by saying that what they did is basically what Sherlock did--forcing the villain to act and get him out of the way. It just worked with Sherlock and failed with M, but it would give Q a basis for agreeing with Bond to do it. We know his hubris has failed him before...

Or just have Mummy not actually die from her wounds. :)

Oh, I hadn't considered that! Hmmm. It is very Holmesian to pretend to be dead. Now I'm picturing meetings of Fake Dead Holmes Anonymous. :-D
