I still remember his acting as Hawking when he was getting his earlier medical examinations done that were rather painful and the nurse was trying to distract him by getting him to talk about his work. His drawn out slow sadness while talking was an excellent bit of acting.

It's stuff like that which makes me wish for the days when his monologues were more about quiet acting than bravura acting (like in Sherlock and Star Trek).
