My own personal take on Sherlock is a lot of his nastiness comes from being uncomfortable and saying the wrong thing, not just being nasty for nasty's sake. Although, he does a lot of that, too. He wouldn't understand someone who's confidence isn't as great as his own, so he doesn't always understand that he needs to point out to her that he likes and trusts her. He thinks it should be evident by the fact that he's chosen her to help him. I liked that we saw a few moments of him taking the time to speak gently and truthfully to people he cares about this series.
