I'm sorry you and your mother are having flare-ups. It does seem odd that they're seasonal, but some years from now, doctors and scientists will probably find a reason for it.
I love how you write about your kalanchoe (which I had to look up, because I didn't know what that was). We've thought of planting milkweed for butterflies, but Brilliant Husband pointed out that we know so little about it, we might already have it and not know! I think we don't have any, really, but we're very bad about putting any time or energy into plants.
I'm sorry you had such a dark winter! We had a Florida winter without even a hard freeze in our area, which I guess is good for our plants, but we're in a drought now. I hear so many extremes of weather these days.
