Maybe it's not so much that neurotypical person are able to do as that neurodivergent people have a harder time doing it? I'm the only one in my family who seems to have trouble with it. My mum can even sleep with my dad watching TV next to her.

The earplugs are a little uncomfortable, but only in one of my ears. They came with different sized earbuds you can switch out to find the one that fits the best, and the kind I bought (the 'Plus' version) has both silicone and foam earbuds, but I haven't tried the foam ones yet, they might be more comfortable. I would say you get used to them the more you wear them. I'm pretty sensitive in general and I've been okay with them. My right ear hurts a little after I've worn them for a few hours, but I also have TMJ pain from tooth grinding on that side so it's hard to say for sure it's the earplugs alone. I think I'm happy to trade off comfort for not being miserable, lol. Your mileage may vary.

ETA: for scientific purposes, I tried the foam earbuds over the last few days and found them more comfortable than the silicone ones
