Actually, for the original version of the pilot, Bob was a fire spirit with skull-like elements. And this was LONG before Terry was cast--they used a temporary voice track, which was laughably bad! You can see if in the hour and a half version. They must have reshot bits of Harry interacting with the skull after the fact.
