eeeee! *flail* Er, sorry. I'm a feedback whore, so anything I hear about my stories tends to make me rather ridiculously happy, especially when it comes from a writer I really respect like yourself.
We never did any grammar in school - seriously - so I'm always sort of winging it when it comes to proper speech and then sometimes French wanders in and messes me up.
Ew, really? My school, you had to pass a grammar exam before you could pass sophomore year. As a result, I'm probably too picky about grammar, but I do like being able to help clear up little things like that. Your grammar is usually impeccable, too, if that helps. I think that is the one mistake I saw in here.
As for the rest, it makes total sense, the solemnity is very, very understated (much like a Terry Pratchett book; mostly funny, but when you're finished reading it you go, "huh, that was actually really deep"), and yes, it was very excellently done.
