Author's notes: Written for the Question meme and for the 'Silver' prompt on my [livejournal.com profile] occhallenge table. [livejournal.com profile] quickyfant asked "how did Bob react to knowing Harry is going to marry [Miranda]?" Set in my mini!Dresdens 'verse, pre-series.

Bob emerged from his skull at the sound of drawers being rifled through. Harry paced by him on his way to another set of drawers, with a preoccupied, “hey,” as he passed.

“Good morning,” Bob replied, following after Harry. “Are you looking for something in particular or are you just making a mess?”

“I need a ring,” Harry said. He yanked open another drawer and started to remove its contents with alacrity. A rubber chicken went flying through Bob’s shoulder.

“Why do you need a ring?” Bob asked, deciding not to ask about the chicken. Sometimes it was just best to remain ignorant.

“Mira and I are getting married,” Harry said, matter-of-factly. Another drawer’s contents were emptied onto the counter. “And I know I had a ring around here...”

There were very few times in his life and unlife where Bob found himself genuinely surprised. This was one of them. “You...mar...what?” he sputtered. “Why on Earth would you want to do that?”

“Well, Mira just said we should,” Harry explained, gesturing upwards towards the loft. “And I thought it seemed like a good idea. I mean, we’re practically married already. She lives here, we do our laundry together, she lectures me about leaving my clothes on the floor. She’s bonded with my ghost. We’re just making it official.”

“I see,” Bob said. “I suppose that makes sense...”

“Your enthusiasm is overwhelming,” Harry said, dryly.

“Well, it’s all rather sudden,” Bob said. “Watch your head.” Harry shifted and managed to avoid hitting an open drawer as he stood up. “When is this marriage taking place?”

“’Bout an hour,” Harry answered. He crawled under the table.

“What?!” Bob said.

“We’re gonna go to city hall,” Harry explained. “Mira’s just getting dressed.”

“I have to say I think you’re rushing into things a bit,” Bob said, fussing.

Harry crawled out from under the table and proceeded to open and close some more drawers. “Nah,” he said.

“You’re quite serious about this, aren’t you?” Bob noted, somewhat incredulously.

Harry made a triumphant noise and pulled a small ring box from a drawer. He opened it up and flashed it to Bob. The ring inside was silver with a love knot shape, and had a small diamond set in the middle.

“It was my grandmother’s,” Harry said. “Dresden. Dad put it in a safety deposit box in Atlantic City until I turned eighteen.” He frowned at it and looked nervous. “Do you think she’ll like it?”

Bob examined the ring and nodded briskly. He had to admit it looked very much like something Miranda would choose for herself. “Yes, it is very elegant, Harry.”

Harry beamed. “You’ll come, right?” he said, slipping the ring into the pocket of his pants. “To be a witness, or whatever? I mean, it would be weird if you weren’t there.”

Bob’s growing panic was pushed aside by a feeling of warmth. He tried to return to his previous aim of deterrence, but Harry looked so genuinely excited and sure of himself, that Bob couldn’t seem to find the right words.

The door to the lab opened and Miranda stuck her head in. “Hey guys,” she said. “Jess is in. She’ll meet us there. She’s getting me a bouquet, too, apparently.”

“Great!” Harry said, smiling at her affectionately.

They both looked to Bob, who was still trying to sort out his thoughts on the matter. “Er...” he began. “Yes, I’ll come of course.”

Miranda and Harry both grinned at him.

“I hope you’re not getting married in that,” he said to Harry, gesturing to the jeans and sweater he was sporting. “Find a suit, at least.”

Harry rolled his eyes, but left the lab, hopefully in search of more appropriate clothing. Bob let out a soft sigh, but steeled himself up. Miranda smiled at him, mouthing ‘thank you’ before she went after Harry.

Aww, of course he'd want Bob there. Both Harry and Miranda! *snickers at Mira's 'thank you' to Bob*

Aw! I was rather touched that Harry in his wording gave Bob the option of not attending the wedding if he so chose. But of course Bob would come!

Lovely work as always!!
