Since I think most of my flist is flisted on my flist's flists, I think a lot of recs I would give to LJ stuff would be known to most people. So, I thought I'd do some recs from FF.net, since they would be less likely to have been read before.
Captain Doctor (Firefly)
Summary (from author): AU—instead of losing the Battle of Serenity, the Independents won, extending the course of the war. Takes place around the same time as the series, six years after the First Battle of Serenity on Hera.
Why it's cool: AUs are always neat and this one is very clever in how it reassigns the roles of the characters and gets everyone together in a different manner. It's well-written and keeps everyone in character, with just enough changes to reflect the different situation.
The Barista (SG-1)
Summary (from author): Life as seen through the eyes of Daniel's barista.
Why it's cool: It's a series of vignettes for each episode of the first five seasons, with Kira, a barista at a coffee shop near the SG base, encountering a plethora of the characters and trying to discern just why they are so weird. It's a great look at the characters from an outsider's POV and the characters are well-played and the series is hilarous and heartwrenching at different times. Kira is a bit of a Mary Sue, but she avoids romantic interaction with the main characters (even though she crushes majorly on Daniel). If you can overlook the fact that the Team is oddly attatched to a girl at a coffee shop, it's quite entertaining. There is a sequel, The Assistant, which unfortunately hasn't been updated in a couple of years. It follows Kira along Season Six. The author has written some other great fic, too, so check out more of her stuff.
The Barricade (The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne)
Summary (from author): A little Dickens, by way of a lonely French writer, can be a dangerous thing.
Why it's cool: It's been so long since I first read it, I honestly don't remember much about the plot. It's from the point of view of a child, who somehow encounters Jules Post-Series and he reads her and her friends a book that inspire them to rebel against or save him from Phileas, or something. That's not very helpful, I know, but I do remember liking it very much. Everyone is very well-written and the plot is cute and angsty at times and really captures the relationship between Jules and Phileas as opposite sides of the social ladder. Plus, it's kid!fic and outsider'sPOV!fic, which I am a fan of, as we know.
The Care and Feeding of Hobbits (Lord of the Rings)
Summary (from author): Ruminations on the Little People by Boromir, Man of Gondor.
Why it's cool: Sorting through LOTR fic to find good writing is hard. Finding a good story centered around an in character Boromir is nearly impossible. Since Boromir is my favourite, I am always glad when I succeed and this story is delightful. It's basically lessons in hobbits as the fellowship travel along and Boromir tries to figure them out. The hobbits are adorable and Boromir is very in character and it's all very cute and sweet and sort of sad and stuff. I loved it.
