First of all, Happy Birthday Benedict Cumberbatch! And Happy Emmy Nomination! I imagine that's probably a pretty cool birthday present.

Also, 'grats to Martin Freeman, Paul McGuigan and Steven Moffatt for their noms, as well as Sherlock itself. I'm not sure why only Scandal seemed to be nominated. Did the others air after the cut off date? Because I think Reichenbach was probably the strongest of the three and Andrew Scott deserves at least a nod.

Yay for the nominations!

I wonder if you're right about the date? "Scandal" was, I thought, the weakest. I know some people liked it better than "Hounds," but I too thought "Reichenbach" was the best. (And "Scandal" really ticked me off, for multiple reasons, all tied up in writing.)

I Googled around but I couldn't find the cut off date for this year. I know PBS was flogging all three episodes for nominations, but I don't know if that means anything.

I enjoy Scandal now more than I did when I first saw it, but it's still my least favourite of Series Two. I do think it had the best cinematography, though. But for overall acting and writing I would have put Reichenbach forward. Especially for Martin, who didn't have much to do in Scandal, but absolutely nailed Reichenbach.

ETA: the cut off date was May 31st. I thought they'd all aired by then. Huh.

According to IMDb, they aired May 6, 13, and 20, so all before the cut-off, as you say. I do know a couple of people who thought "Scandal" was the best of the lot, and I try to smile and nod and not be too judgmental towards them. (Funnily enough, none of them are my LJ friends. They're all real-life friends. I try not to get into heated discussions about Sherlock with them partly to keep some of my real-life friends and colleagues from realizing a) how invested I am in the show and b) that I have an LJ life in which I argue this way! Heaven forbid I should accidentally compromise my LJ identity. I did once meet someone I knew only from LJ in another context and figure it out from something that she had said in both places. I told her I knew and who I was, because it seemed only fair, but I didn't tell anyone else.)

All the episodes have some bloopholes, if you look hard enough, but I do think "Reichenbach" is the best overall, and Martin is brilliant in it. I also think it's Benedict's best performance of the series. (Egad, he was twitchy in "Hounds"! He was so over-the-top in a couple of scenes that it threw me out of the illusion of reality. Yes, I get very immersed in my shows.)

The only other thing I can think of is if it somehow couldn't qualify as a 'mini-series', so they had to submit them as a 'tv movies'

Scandal had a lot of issues with it, the main being the characterization of Irene. I think I would have been perfectly fine with it had the last five minutes of the episode not happened. If she'd just texted him and let him know she was alive and that she'd fooled everyone all by herself. I could have handled the rest of it that way, despite the dodgy implications of her character. If she had somehow won in the end, like she did in the original story. I think Moffat wrote himself too big a plot and sort of struggled to get out of it without Sherlock coming off too badly. There's a difference between letting a girl move away without you noticing and letting a terrorist attack happen because you were too busy showing off to notice.

But I am a bit sad that Lara Pulver didn't get a nod. I do think she did an excellent job with what she had to work with and she and Cumberbatch had great chemistry. I also wouldn't have minded seeing Loo Brealey get nominated. I know Molly is a really minor character, but she breaks my heart in every scene she's in.

I didn't mind the over-the-top in Hounds so much, because I thought it worked for Sherlock being really out of his element. I also think that Cumberbatch can appear a bit more hammy because Martin Freeman is such a quiet, still actor. It makes a great contrast, but it does sometimes make it look like Ben's trying too hard.

But hands down, Reichenbach was the best for acting.
