Give me a character that I write or have written and I will tell you either what they look like under Harry's Sight or what a soulgaze with them would be like. Specify which one you prefer, or I'll choose. Either way is fine with me.

For the uninitiated, both concepts come from Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. Sight or Third Eye shows people's true forms, usually in a metaphorical fashion and a soulgaze shows what that person's soul looks like, with their past, present and possible futures and innermost essences on view, unable to hide anything, usually only in a metaphorical fashion.

It doesn't need to be a supernatural character, but characters with some background and/or a decent amount of screentime are preferred so I can make some guesses as to what their essences are. Any of my OCS are welcome, too.

I love this idea. There just isn't enough Dresden on the internet.

How about a soulgaze with Sherlock

Sherlock's soul looks like a laboratory -- not exactly the same as the lab at Barts, but similar. There is a violin concerto playing in the background, softly. There is a microscope in the middle of the room with him bent over it. He looks like himself, only exaggerated. A bit thinner, a bit taller, a bit paler, hair a bit curlier. Around him on lab benches and work surfaces is a collection of samples, evidence or specimens, each labelled neatly with a person's name. The bottle labelled 'Dr John H Watson' is at his right elbow, with a bloody bullet inside it, likely the one that killed the cabbie. Nearby is a jar labelled 'Molly Hooper', which has a human heart in it. 'Mrs Hudson' has something that looks like tea in it and 'DI Lestrade' is an evidence bag with one of his warrant cards in it. Farther away is 'Mycroft Holmes', which contains a piece of paper with apparently nonsense on it, but really one of the codes he used to make up for Sherlock to crack when he was bored as a child. There is a rather large jar with a vicious, evil looking spider trying perpetually to crawl out of it. It's labelled 'James Moriarty'. Also, half hidden under a stack of papers is a evidence bag with a mobile phone in it, labelled simply 'The Woman'.

The lab is spotless and white, apart from one corner which is dirty and dimly lit. There are words carved raggedly into the bench and wall here, which read things like 'addict', 'freak', 'sociopath', 'heartless' and 'wrong!'. There are also case files here, well-looked through and worse for the wear. All of them have 'unsolved' written on them. Scattered around are syringes and white powder.

There are three exits from the lab. One has 'Mind Palace' stencilled on it. That door seems to lead to the beautiful, London perpetually-at-dusk that can be seen through the lab windows. Another exit has a pair of angel wings stencilled on it. If you look through the window, you can see 221b beyond it. The third door has a red skull stencilled on it. Where that one goes is unknown, as beyond it is utter darkness.

Will come back when I have some time to ponder out Forrester's soul, but in the meantime, do please yoink if you are so inclined.

Forrester's soul looks like a long hospital corridor, with various doors leading off of it. Passing by them, you can glimpse into various places that mean something to him. The doors all have signs slotted into the holder next to them, telling you where they lead to. There are two marked 'Home', the first is parenthesized as 'Hexham', which has the kitchen of his childhood home in it. It smells like proper British food. The other, marked 'Chicago', has the den of his house there in it. It smells like Samara's perfume. In both places, there are numerous family pictures on the walls.

Farther down the corridor is 'Work', which is his office at the hospital. It smells like blood and antiseptic, but in a way suggesting this is a good thing. 'School' is nearby, which has his dorm room in it. It smells like teenage boys in a way suggesting this is NOT a good thing. 'Uni' leads to a lecture hall at King's College Hospital, which smells like chalk and textbooks.

There is a door marked 'Pub', which, unsurprisingly, both looks and smells like a pub. In a good way. It appears to be both in Chicago and London simultaneously, perhaps because the two places remind him of the other.

'Morgue' leads to Cook County's morgue. It's the only room with people in it and they are all patients he's lost. It smells like formaldehyde.

At the very end of a hallway is a door marked 'Magic'. It's pretty dark in there and gives off the sensation that it hasn't been entered often. It smells like scary things and the unknown.

Awww, this is LOVELY. All organized and smart and clever and all the places where he was happy. Also I lol'ed at the contrast between work and school. The sense of smell in this is palpable and very unusual for a soulgaze description but in a good way.

Aww, thanks! I thought I remembered that each wizard experiences soulgazes differently and that Ramirez heard music instead of seeing images, so I thought I'd mess around with the different senses. Smell is a very defining factor in if I like something or not, so I handed that on to Forrester. Thanks for the prompt! I'm still slightly mystified and very chuffed that you like him so much. :D

Pretty much because he's fab and I sort of want to hug him forever? He's like the weird bastard child of House and Wilson with a little bit of John Watson thrown in and quite a bit of his own awesomeness that he created himself. So.

Ooh!!

Soulgaze of Ray Kowalski.

Ray Kowalski's soul looks like a police badge. It's slightly dinged, possibly from bullets, and scratched in places, but otherwise very well-polished and shiny. The name at the bottom has been burned away, but you can still make out 'Stanley Kowalski' underneath the newer 'Ray Vecchio' written there. If you look into the badge, you can see different reflections of various aspects in Ray's life. A flash of red serge and wolf fur. Two people dancing. Bullets being fired. Cars being driven in insane ways. A UFO. Blonde hair that matches Stella's. The side of a black GTO. Home cooked food. Overlayed over all these images, very hard to see, is a reflection of Ray himself, or rather Stanley. He looks like Ray, but less sure of himself and nerdier and not as handsome.

Ohhh, well, since you've already written quite a lovely description for Sherlock, how about a soulgaze with John Watson to see why the two of them fit together so well? :D

John's soul is a forked road in the middle of a forrest. There is a sign post with London streets signs on it indicating where the forks lead. The sign at the top of the post points to the right, down a friendly, happy looking path. It says 'Baker Street' on it. If you listen, you can hear the sound of laughter, violin playing, beakers clinking together, fingers on a computer keyboard, Mrs Hudson's 'yoo-hoo!' greeting and two men speaking and joking with one another. Underneath, if you listen carefully, there's also gunfire, the pounding of feet running, and explosions.

The next sign down points to the left and it says 'War' on it. The path it indicates is twisted and dark, with charred trees and big rocks making it hard to walk on. If you listen, you can hear the sound of explosions, gunfire, people screaming and crying, medical machines beeping and orders being given. Underneath, if you listen closely, you can hear the sound of soldiers laughing and joking with one another, people speaking in foreign languages with their tones indicating gratitude, and children playing in places that are safe now.

At the base of the post is a rucksack with badges sewn on it - the medical corp logo, various flags of countries he's been to, one that looks like the pattern to the wallpaper at 221b, a skull, a red cross, the London Underground logo and others. One of the pockets has a notebook and pen in it, and there's a laptop and jumper inside the main part. There is a gun sticking out of one pocket and a stethoscope in another.

Oh goodness, I didn't reply to this yet, gah! So, belatedly, WOW. This is so beautiful. It makes me wonder what I'd look like under such a gaze, heh. Your descriptions all sound believable and true to John's character. I particularly enjoyed the undercurrent of war that threads through John's overall existence, but moreover, how so many mannerisms gained from his time with Sherlock rise above that painful undercurrent.

Underneath, if you listen closely, you can hear the sound of soldiers laughing and joking with one another, people speaking in foreign languages with their tones indicating gratitude, and children playing in places that are safe now.

Ah, I love that. Just goes to show that so few things are ever 100% darkness. There's hope all over the place, if it's just looked for.

There is a gun sticking out of one pocket and a stethoscope in another.

Lovely. Thank you for writing this!

I think soulgazes are probably my favourite fictional concept, like, ever. I think they're so cool. It's like description porn and I love description. :-D

Thanks for the prompt! I'm glad what I came up with worked for you.

I've done soulgazes for everyone else, so I'll do Sight for Ivy.

Under Haryr's Sight, Ivy looks to be made entirely of scraps of paper. There are words in all languages constantly being written and rewritten all over her, blindingly, sickeningly fast. Only her eyes remain human looking. They never blink and are bright, curious, and terrifying. Looking too long at her with the Sight would make a person crazy. There is just too much information constantly being updated that to permenantly remember everything you saw would take up too much room in your brain and it would overload.
