awanderingbard: (SHERLOCK: Sherlock shock)

You may know of my love of BBC radio programmes, and my love of Sherlock Holmes. So when I heard an ad for 'The Beekeeper's Apprentice', I thought I'd give it a go.

I'd read about the 'Mary Russell' pastiches, and how very divisive they were, but I have a high tolerence for less-than-ideal entertainment, so I thought it couldn't be as bad as they said.

Five minutes in and Mary had already perfectly deduced Holmes, and he'd failed to realize she was a girl dressed as a boy.

Nope.

In other news, Mum is going to give Sherlock a try tonight. She likes Elementary a lot, so hopefully she'll enjoy Sherlock as well. Though it's okay if she doesn't.

I've also reached point where my characters are starting to be versions of my versions of the characters, so I think it's a good time to revisit the source material.

Yeah, I had heard about the Mary Sueness, but I thought it had been exaggerated. I at least thought Holmes trained her to make deductions, not that she magically knew how. And anytime a historical heroine dresses like a boy, it's time to get nervous.

It didn't help that the lady voicing her was clearly grown woman trying to sound like a girl, and had the most RP accent I have heard short of the Queen herself.

I will not be going near the books.
