Stolen from me!
Take a few of your original characters and tell us...
1. How you thought of their name
2. What made you create the character in the first place
3. How the character has changed over time (if they have changed)
4. Any random fun fact about that character
Characters Playing:
Alec Thornton
Metrodora Holmes
Abby Watson
Alec
1. How you thought of their name
When I decided to make the character, I used a name from similarish character in a fic that was lying around. His name was Alec, and I thought it very much suited Tom Hiddleston's appearance. I am very fussy about names. For example: I really wanted his last name to begin with a 'Th' sound, because...that's the sound that suited the character. Yeah, I don't know, either.
2. What made you create the character in the first place?
My lovely enabler
joonscribble and I were chatting about Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch and their adorable friendship, and how Tom should go on Sherlock and maybe be Molly's super smiley boyfriend, and then I decided to write a fic where this happened.
3. How the character has changed over time (if they have changed)
He hasn't been around very long, so he hasn't changed much. He went through a few careers, including a veterinarian, some sort of hospital employee, and a fireman. I chose a teacher, because I thought he should have a bit less excitement in his life than Molly has in hers.
4. Any random fun fact about that character.
Alec has a very big, blended family. His parents divorced when he was little, and his father remarried. His step-mum has children from a previous relationship, and he has a couple of half-siblings as well. He and his mother are amicable, but don't see each other often. He was raised by his dad and "Gigi", the step-mum.
Metrodora Holmes
1. How you thought of their name
I knew I wanted something weird, and I like named with significant meanings, so I searched around for 'motherly' names, and found 'Metrodora', which means 'mother's gift', and I thought that worked because of the boys getting her observation skills. Mycroft sounded like a last name to me, so I made it her maiden name.
2. What made you create the character in the first place
The very first Sherlock fic I ever tried to write was a kinkmeme prompt about John going home for Christmas dinner with Sherlock. So, I needed Mummy. That fic has about eight different versions still hanging around my folder. I couldn't get it to work. But I recycled Dora for 'Road Hazards' and then brought her into 'Lost for Words', and now she's taken on a life of her own.
3. How the character has changed over time (if they have changed)
She's gotten slightly more eccentric, and, if she's written in her younger years, a bit more hyperactive (she's seemed to mellow out as she's gotten older). Also a little less...sappy, maybe? She was more adoring in my first attempt at writing her. Now she's more supportive and approving, but still able to tell her children off if need be.
4. Any random fun fact about that character
Here's something cut from 'Simple Things': she's addicted to puzzle computer games. Hidden object, word games, adventure games, time management games. Anything involving problem solving. Q is constantly appalled at her desktop, because she doesn't clean it up or organize it, so there's icons littered all over the place.
Abby Watson
1. How you thought of their name
Unusually for me, I went through a few names, including Evie and Charlotte. But I liked Abby the best. It means 'father's joy', something Sherlock very obliquely comments on in 'Perfect'. The spelling was always Abigael, as opposed to Abigail. It suited her better, according to my weird logic. I wanted something rather normal for her, instead of the unusual names I often give to characters. I didn't think John and Sarah would be going for something too weird.
2. What made you create the character in the first place
I don't even remember, but she was around long before I ever posted a fic with her. In her original incarnation, in yet another story I started but abandoned long before she came to her current form, she was trying to earnestly propose to Sherlock, as little girls do, and Sherlock was alone with her and doing his best to handle the situation properly. She was about six in that story, but I abandoned it due to similarities between her and Fay.
When I wrote Christmas Future, it was originally part of a trilogy of stories I had in mind. Christmas Past would be John and Harry as kids, and Christmas Present would be John after Sherlock's death, and then Christmas Future with Abby and Sarah (originally Mary, I changed it because I didn't want to lock myself in to an interpretation that might be different from the one on the show). I only ended up writing the Christmas Future one.
3. How the character has changed over time (if they have changed)
I did toy with her being adopted for a little bit, but decided to make her a biological child in the end, to give me a few more options in regards to genetics playing out. Though I was intrigued by how much nurture would have affected her, too. And she's an only child now, but I did contemplate giving her a (possibly adopted) sibling. I thought it would be too much like my mini!Dresdens, though, and with John and Sarah's lives and their age, I decided they were probably content with one child.
4. Any random fun fact about that character.
An older Abby fact:
She always includes Sherlock when asked to draw her family at school, something that has gotten John and Sarah into trouble, as Sherlock is quite often doing alarming things in his picture form. Also describing him as 'Daddy's friend' has gotten John a few odd looks.

Date: 2013-09-13 06:58 pm (UTC)I think Tom Hiddleston is much less scary than Loki. Did you hear about him seeing the child fan near filming and meeting the boy and even putting the boy on his shoulders? (If not, go here.)
Abby! I love that girl. They may have picked a normal name, but everyone else will spell it wrong, and Abby will probably go through a period of her life where she's mad at her parents for not giving her the "normal" spelling. Maybe Sherlock can convince her that her spelling is better.
Daddy's friend Sherlock FTW!

Date: 2013-09-13 07:27 pm (UTC)I have a last name like that! Hopefully the majority of the time she'll be going by Abby, it'll just be on official documents that she'll have to be precise. But I'm sure Uncle Sherlock can reassure her while also implying her name is pretty boring.
