awanderingbard: (SHERLOCK: Molly cameo)
[personal profile] awanderingbard
I was having trouble integrating Alec into the rest of the verse, and so I thought I'd try a writing exercise to help me get used to writing him. I remembered the 30 Day OTP Challenge meme things that goes around tumblr sometimes, and selected ten prompts to get myself going.

So, ten drabble/ficlet/excerpt things, about 2200 words total. Very fluffy, with hints of sexytimes, but nothing over a PG-13ish rating. I wrote them and then tried to get them in semi-chronological order.

01- On a date

Molly didn't give out her address to men any more. Not since Jim. If things went wrong, she wanted a place that was safe to go back to. So, instead of Alec picking her up for their first date, she was meeting him.

Except he wasn't here.

She was trying not to panic. It was only two minutes past seven. People were late, sometimes. It didn't mean he wasn't coming. It didn't mean that she was going to be standing here like a twit all night waiting for him. He was probably just late.

At 7:05, she decided he wasn't coming.

At 7:07, she went back to thinking he was just late.

At 7:09, she started to panic.

At 7:10, the restaurant door opened and Alec came running in.

“I'm so sorry,” he said. “I gave myself extra time, and I took a cab, because I thought the driver would know where to go, but he didn't, and we had to ask, and...I'm really glad you're still here.”

Molly was so relieved to see him, and he looked so very apologetic (and adorably rumpled!) that she forgave him right away.

“I'm not very good at getting places,” he explained, as they were led to a table.

“It's okay,” Molly said. “I'm good at waiting.”

02 – Holding hands

“Eeek!” Molly said, as her feet went out from under her. Walking down these wet steps in these (beautiful but impractical) shoes was proving to require a lot of concentration.

Alec made a truly heroic catch before she went down completely, grabbing her around the waist and setting her back on her feet.

“Sorry!” Molly said. “It's just a bit slippery.”

“No worries,” Alec said. “If I hadn't got us turned around, we wouldn't have to come this way. Tell you what,” he held out a hand. “I'll keep you on your feet, you navigate.”

Molly giggled, and grabbed his hand. “Deal.”

03 – Kissing

Alec stuffed his arms through the sleeves of his jacket as he stepped out of the restaurant, and then turned back to make sure Molly was still with him.
She was, in fact, directly behind him, on the stair that went up to the door, putting her at almost his height. His lips brushed across her nose, which wrinkled in a very adorable fashion.

“Whoops,” he murmured, taking a step back. “Sorry.”

“It's okay,” she said, with a smile.

He found himself very focused on her smile, and how very opportunely placed it was in relation to his mouth. He leaned forward a bit and kissed her, properly.

“Sorry,” he murmured again, when they'd parted.

She smiled again. “It's okay.”

04 – Wearing each others’ clothes

“Molly?” Alec called, from her bedroom.

She went in and found him wrapped in a towel, very wet from the shower. She was distracted by this for several long moments, before she shook her head free. “Yes?” she said.

“I could have sworn I came in here wearing trousers last night,” he said, looking around on the floor. “But I don't have any now.”

“I put them in the dryer for a bit, to get the wrinkles out,” Molly explained. “I didn't think it would be good for you to go in to school with rumpled clothes.”

“Oh! Thank you. Good thinking.” He stepped over, pulling on her shirt. Well, his shirt. She was wearing it. “And what about going in without a shirt?” he said.

“Well, you can't go in in the same shirt,” Molly said, with a grin. “People will talk.”

“I see, and what do you suggest I wear instead?” he asked.

She looked around, and then grabbed her cardigan and draped it over his shoulders. “There,” she said. “That'll do.”

“I'm not sure if it's my size,” Alec said, 'regretfully'. “No, I'm afraid I'm going to have to insist that I get my shirt back.” He reached out and started undoing the buttons.

“Well, I suppose I can allow that,” she said. “But only if I get my towel back.”

Alec grinned. “I think that can be arranged.”

05– Gaming/watching a movie

“Scopa!” Alec said, triumphantly.

He swept the cards on the table, while Molly frowned.

“But...I don't get it,” she said. “How did...oh, I see.” She stuck her tongue out at him. “You're too good at this.”

“I have years of practice,” Alec said.

Molly could tell by how old the Italian deck of cards was. All the corners were dog eared and some of the patterns were coming off. She lay down a seven of batons. Alec played a three of coins.

“Oh!” Molly said. She played a King, and captured the two cards on the table.“Scopa!”

Alec held up his hand for a high five. “See, you can figure this out,” he said.“This is a very serious game in my family, it'll be good to know for when you meet them.” He flushed slightly. “I mean, if—I mean. Sorry... is it my turn?”

06 – Making out

There were a lot of advantages to Molly being small. She fit very nicely in his arms, and he could see over her head to the mirror when they were getting ready in the morning, and she would probably fit in his pocket if he ever wanted to tote her around with him.

Her height was not an advantage when he was trying to snog her, though. At least, while they were standing up.

He braced his hand on the work surface behind her to get a bit of balance, but he still felt like he was going to tip over and squash her. There were two options: stop snogging (not an option) or figure out a better way to do it (the only option).

Molly made a slight peep of alarm as he grabbed her around the waist and lifted her up to sit on the work surface, moving a plate over to make room for her. A domino effect of plates hitting plates made a mug tip into the sink with a crash, and Toby rowl with indignation. Neither Alec nor Molly noticed.

He moved up to the edge of the work surface, and Molly wrapped her legs around his waist.

Yes. Problem solved.

07 – Hanging out with friends

“How long have you two been dating now?” Lestrade asked.

“Three and a half months,” Alec and Molly said, in unison.

“Oh, that's adorable,” Sherlock said, with false glee. “Ouch!” He glared at Sarah, who looked innocent.

“Behave,” Mrs Hudson said. “It's John's birthday.”

“I have been behaving,” Sherlock said, petulantly. “For the past two hours. How long do I have to sit here?”

“Until we're done pudding,” John said.

“But you haven't ordered pudding yet!” Sherlock whinged. “You're just sitting here, talking!”

Alec looked over to Molly, whose cheeks were flushed red like they got when she was past her socialization limit. She was very happy to go out and be with her friends, but there was a distinct moment when she went from having fun to having had enough. Stay past that point, and she wilted away.

He leaned down to whisper in her ear. “Time to go?”

She nodded.

Alec pretended to look at his watch. “Sorry, I have school tomorrow,” he said. “I think we'll have to go.”

“No worries, thanks for coming,” John said.

“That is completely unfair!” Sherlock declared. “I want to go. Ouch! Stop that!”

Sarah looked innocent again.

08- Spooning

Molly quietly unlocked the door to Alec's flat, and tip-toed in. He'd left the stove light on, thankfully, so she wasn't completely in the dark. She put down her shoulder bag and took off her coat and shoes, then went to his bedroom, aiming for the glow in the dark strip that was on the small step that led up to it.

Alec always slept in the same place in the same position. He lay down and stayed there. It was incredible. She got undressed and pulled a nightgown from 'her' drawer in his dresser. The sound of the drawer opening made him stir.

“Mmm?” he said.

“It's me,” Molly said.

“Mmm,” he said, sounding approving. He lifted up the covers for her.“M'here.”

“I'm coming,” she said, with a giggle.

She got into bed, and he threw the covers over her, followed by his arm. She wiggled around, and he made an annoyed noise, rearranging his arm several times until she was comfortable.

“Worm,” he muttered.

“I'm not a worm,” Molly objected. She wiggled a bit more, finally finding the best spot. He moved his arm again, and made a pleased noise.

“Stay,” he said.

“I am,” she said.

“You case?” he asked, pressing his face into her neck.

“It's solved,” she said.

“Good,” he said. “Night.”

She smiled, and closed her eyes. “Night.”

09 – Arguing

“I have to go.”
“Again? Molly, that's the third time this week.”
“I know, but—but it's important. It's a case.”
“Yes, it's always a case. It would be nice to get through a whole meal without a case.”
“I can't tell him no.”
“Yes, you can. You're not a slave, Molls, just say you can't come. It's not as though he can't get on without you.”
“What's that supposed to mean?”
“What? Nothing.”
“Are you saying I'm—I'm useless?”
“No, that's not what I meant, I just—it's not your job. This isn't part of your job. It's what you choose to do. I don't sign for every volunteer project at the school that I'm asked to do.”
“This is different! It's important!”
“So, your job is more important than my job?”
“No, I just meant... it's urgent. It's saving lives.”
“They're dead, Molly, I think they can wait until we're done eating.”
“That's not funny!”
“I'm not trying to be funny. Look, just go, okay? If you want to go, go.”
“But—”
“Go. He'll just text again, and we can't keep him waiting, can we?”
“It's not like that.”
“Isn't it? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like everything revolves around Sherlock Holmes.”
“That's not true! I don't want to be—I just—ugh! You don't understand.”
“No, I don't. So go.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”

10 – Making up afterwards

Molly very cautiously approached the door to her bedroom and peered in. Alec was in bed, with his reading glasses on, grading homework. Toby was draped across his feet, his belly exposed to try and get some rubs. Molly leaned in the doorway, uncertainly, and then tapped twice. At least he was still there. That was good, right?

He looked up, and moved his glasses up to his head. “Hey,” he said.

“Hi,” she said. “Can I come in?”

“It's your bedroom,” he said, dryly.

“Oh. Right,” she said. She went over and climbed up onto the bed, sitting awkwardly on her knees. “I'm sorry.”

“Me too,” Alec said. “I didn't mean to imply you weren't important to Sherlock's work.”

“I didn't mean to say your job isn't important,” Molly said. “And you were right. I've talked to Sherlock. I don't think he'll listen, but at least I've warned him that I'm going to start saying no, if we're doing something.”

“That must have been hard for you,” Alec said.

She nodded.

“Thank you,” Alec said.

She nodded. “I don't mean for it to be so...demanding,” she said. “But I need to do it because...I'm good at it. I'm not good at a lot of things, but—but I'm really good at what I do do. Does that make sense?”

“No,” Alec said. “I mean, yes. But not the part about not being good at a lot of things. You're good at loads of things.”

Molly flushed. “You don't have to say that,” she said.

“What makes you think I think I need to?” Alec asked.

“Hey, don't use your Teacher Problem Resolving thing on me!” she said, with a giggle.

Alec held up his hands apologetically. “Sorry. Force of habit. Did you solve the case?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“Are you going to tell me about it?” he asked.

“No,” she said. “Unless you want me to?”

Alec put aside the homework, and lifted the covers up for her to get in. “Hit me, Hastings,” he said.

“No, I don't want to be Hastings!” Molly said, climbing in next to him. “John is Hastings. I'm more like...erm...”

“The plucky bystander who helps solve the case and falls in love with a dashing but rogueish man?” Alec suggested.

“Yes,” Molly said. “That's exactly who I am.”

Awww! All of this was lovely. My particular favorites were #1 and #7. I love the detail of Alec being so bad with directions. He must never get to chaperone school field trips. And a whiny Sherlock is always fun. At least to the readers.

“But you haven't ordered pudding yet!” Sherlock whinged. “You're just sitting here, talking!”

He practically sounds panicked. Oh my god! SO. MUCH. MORE. TIME. LEFT.

I love these and hope to see more of Alec.

Thank you! I had a lot of fun with them, actually, I don't often write couply stuff. It was a pleasant change to do flat out shipping.

I love the detail of Alec being so bad with directions. He must never get to chaperone school field trips.

He gives his mobile to the little girls who have crushes on him and thus follow him very closely and lets them man the satnav.

He practically sounds panicked. Oh my god! SO. MUCH. MORE. TIME. LEFT.

LOL! And then he starts doing the puzzles on Abby's kids menu to keep himself from cracking up.

There is nothing funnier than the image of Sherlock dressed in his coat and scarf, bent over a kids menu with a crayon, furiously doing the puzzles.

Haha! I love the idea that Sherlock doesn't take his coat and scarf off, so he can escape easily. I can just picture him sitting at the end of the table with his arms crossed, looking more of a child than Abby, who is actually quite pleased to be there and get all the attention.

Sherlock might actually prefer being assigned to the kids table because he could either 1) leave and no one will/could physically detain him or 2) kids seem to get less offended by the things he says so he could just talk as per his normal level.

Although, someone might accidentally end up crying.

I'm sure any kids he'd be around would have spent their wholes lives up to this point being insulted by him, and therefore just roll along because they have been reassured by their parents that Uncle Sherlock doesn't mean it, and of course you can be a ballerina, your neck is absolutely not too short, shut up Sherlock.

I think Sherlock would be quite at home in a group of people in awe of him.

HAHAHA!

I need to dig up a partially written story of Sherlock visiting John working at the clinic during Halloween and criticizing all the children on the inaccuracy of their costumes.

Oh, that'd be great! It's too bad they don't really trick or treat in London, I'd love to send Sherlock out with Abby and have her return with a boat load of candy due to Sherlock accurately choosing which houses were the best to approach.

EEee! Adorable! I imagine the adults being all, "Oh, are you dressed up as that man on the blog?" "I am that man on the blog." "Oh...is this...your...child?"

And then Lestrade gets called because Sherlock's very terse 'she is not my child' makes people think she's been abducted.

John: Can you not take my child anywhere without the police being called?!

I love how the presence of Sherlock in Abby's life causes strangers to be concerned. Like him showing up in her drawings and him minding her. But in reality she might possibly be the safest when with him since Sherlock definitely won't hesitate murdering anyone threatening her.

Yes, this is the thing! This is absolutely why I love writing them. Because he doesn't care (well, maybe a little) but she is John's Daughter and therefore she is Important to John and therefore she is under the umbrella of People We Do Not Let Bad Things Happen To. And John is really the only one who gets that, Sherlock is not reliable, but if if you really need him, he moves the world for you.

Yeah, it's that quality that prevents him from being genuinely dislikeable.

And that's difference between him and Moriarty.

And Sherlock has a vague respect for human life now that he's been with John. I'm guessing Moriarty's Watson would only exacerbate his evil. Speaking of which, is Sebastian Moran going to appear in series 3? I'm still obsessively waiting for this character to get modernized on this show. Especially after I saw the nice job Elementary did.

And Sherlock has a vague respect for human life now that he's been with John.

I would say he was apathetic more than disrespectful toward human life, but yes, that's true. I'd really love to know what it is about John in particular that gets through to him. Presumably John isn't the first person to think of saying 'hey, stop that', so there has to be some reason that he makes Sherlock listen.

I'm guessing Moriarty's Watson would only exacerbate his evil.

I totally agree with this, but it's funny because I used to see so much fanfic on tumblr as I scrolled down my dash about Moran and Moriarty where Seb is sorting of reigning Jim in. I love how people try to justify a character who has yet to appear on screen. And I love how the three main ships are a man who is probably asexual and a man who is pretty vocal about being straight, two men who have never met on screen, and two men, one of whom doesn't officially exist.

I stopped following people on tumblr who were posting Sherlock spoilers, but before I did, there was some speculation that Tomi May might have been cast. He tweeted something about going to a read through that was quickly deleted, and there was a general agreement that he looked like a Sebastian Moran. But nothing official, as far I as know.

I swear I am more of a gen writer than anything, but apparently my inner romantic comedy is making an effort to run free, lately. I need Series Three. I'm out of regular canon to explore, so I only have my own.

Though poor Sherlock might also need a boyfriend to rescue him from stupid birthday dinners! :)

Hehe! I think if he were really desperate, he'd find a way to rescue himself. But he might consider it a decent reason to actually try this whole 'dating' thing. :-)

“It's okay,” Molly said. “I'm good at waiting.”

Mmm, this is so romantic and also quite touching.

“Oh, that's adorable,” Sherlock said, with false glee.

Ahahaha, I can completely see Sherlock putting on his Normal Person persona for this. And complaining that he wanted to leave as well and that it wasn’t fair that he couldn’t—hahaha, wonderful. Plus, Sarah is amazing.

I’m also very charmed by Alec’s complete inability to navigate.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and Alec! I hope he'll cooperate for other stories, now. He and Molly's lives are a bit seperate from the rest of the characters, so finding a way to get him involved and how he might respond to everyone is a bit tricky.
