awanderingbard: (BB: Oh No!)

So, last night, after I posted my latest story, I saved that file, and that was fine. And I was off to bed, so I went to save the other three story files and I had open, and they wouldn't save because it said the flash drive was corrupted or some such thing, which had apparently happened in the literal five seconds between saving one file and trying to save another. So, I saved those three files to another drive, and took the flash drive out to see if reloading it helped.

And now my flash drive is a mess and I can't access any of my stories. And I don't have them backed up, because I keep them on the flash drive so they are safe, ironically.

Good news: three of the active stories I was working on are safe.
Bad news: literally everything else is possibly gone.
Good news: let's be honest, the majority of those stories were fragments that I wouldn't finish anyway.
Bad news: I lost a few stories that I'm really bummed out about, and a lot of character development stuff.
Good news: I have a pretty good memory to help me put them back together.
Bad news: Oh, dear God, why?!

So, I haven't quite given up hope yet, and I'm trying to find a solution, or even somewhere professional to take it, and either way, it's not the end of the world.

But...fuck this shit.

Oh NO, that's awful and so frustrating. I hope you either find a solution or are able to recreate what you lost.

Nothing I've tried has worked so far, so I'm kind of accepting it as lost. But, there's literally only maybe three stories that I really wish I still had, so I'm probably just going to try to rewrite them. And I have snippets posted on memes to help me out. It'll be okay. I'm trying to look on it as opening a new notebook to write in. :-)

That's really annoying! I hope you're able to find a solution.

Yeah, I was pretty upset, but I think I went through the stages of grief and am pretty near acceptance now. The only stories I'm sad I've lost are the epic War Adventures one, just because of how much work and research I put into it. But I think I might split that off into the two separate ideas it should have been, since it went off-course. And I would have liked to keep the 'Steve and Nora meet' one, but I can rewrite that. It's just a lot of work gone. :-(

I do have three stories to be getting on with, from three of my various AUs, so at least there's that!

Ack, I'm sorry for all the work lost! But it sounds like all your other stories in the queue are using this opportunity to try and budge to the front so there is indeed that!

For some reason your comment made me imagine all my characters performing an emergency evacuation from my damaged flash drive, in an orderly fashion led by, like, three AU versions of Captain America and the Avengers.

"Children and unsettled daemon characters first!"

And then some sort of headcount, followed by the Captains America allowing people forward to have their stories written in the safety of a new drive.

On the bright side, this makes the face that my period key broke yesterday and now I'm punching a random hole in my keyboard to end sentences seem very trivial.

This is so Steve and Issie.

Is it that the key itself is missing but you're still able to get a period or is the entire period-creating-area broken so all your sentences look vaguely run-on?

The key is missing. I was cleaning my keyboard yesterday, and when I removed the period key to clean underneath it, the plastic hinges came off and won't go back on. So, I'm either pressing a wiggly key staying in place through force of will, or the little suction cup where the key should be. It has not been a great twenty-four hours for Hattie the laptop.

I like that your laptop shares a name with Jarvis' daemon. That feels super appropriate.

I've transitioned largely into writing fic snippets on google docs. Mainly because I don't trust my laptop not to die at any minute but also it allows me to work on fic where ever. Because while I should be working on academic things at my academic library computer, here I am pecking away at teen!Winnie and Sherlock sleuthing while Winnie also thinks about a boy she's sort of dating maybe. Because somehow I now write romance-stuff too.

I think Hattie the laptop came first. She was originally Oliver the laptop, in honour of the name I gave my IV pole when I had my gallbladder out (he was a nice IV pole), but Oliver completely crashed one day and had to be entirely reformatted, so I renamed him for for better omens, and my mom suggested Hattie, which seemed like a good name. Haddie gets her name from it meaning 'home ruler', which is appropriate to Jarvis, and my laptop, I suppose.

My WiFi is named JARVIS.

One of the things I lost is Clint Barton's children's daemons names. I hope I can remember them. I know they were all archery related...? Kiris, Pila, and...something Swedish for feather? I think? And Nidis for his wife.

Finnish for feather! It's Sulka. Yay me!

I've transitioned largely into writing fic snippets on google docs.

That's a good idea! I will keep that in mind for the future.

Because somehow I now write romance-stuff too.

I'd like to think that's because of me. I have no regrets!

The three stories that were rescued are a Angie/Bond 'verse Christmas one (I tossed him in there, but I'm not entirely sure he'll remain, I may switch it to generic Agent Carter characters have Christmas together), a Superkids verse of six day old!JJ's first Christmas, and an Abby 'verse Alec and Molly fluff thing, which is also Christmas.

Best idea ever! I now regret not getting more creative when I had to recently re-name my WiFi.

I'd like to think that's because of me. I have no regrets!

Not wanting to lose my previous identity, I made the romance angsty.

I hope Bond gets to stay. After watching Spectre, I got re-inspired to visit the world of Bond, Q, and those Holmes geniuses who canonically are not related to Q in anyway but the actors make it so easy.

I think it might have reverted to the default name recently, but at one time it was totally JARVIS.

That's my girl!

I hope Bond gets to stay.

I think he will. He and Angie are having some fun flirting with each other, as they do. I enjoy them together very much. I like the idea of them both living their lives and doing their thing, and casually getting together to have fun when they feel like it, and that working for them.

I'm just trying to decide how fluffy I want it to get. Bond can either be vaguely sweet or slightly more sweet. Knowing me, he'll probably be doing the latter.

I won't be seeing Spectre until it comes out on PPV or somewhere, but in the meantime, I'm free to AU as I like, I suppose. :-)

Thank you! As far as disasters go, it's upsetting, but not life-ending or anything. It's more a sense of not having the posterity of what I've written, than losing anything that I can't recreate. I feel better tonight than I did this morning, and I feel like I've gone through all the stages of grief and hit acceptance, now. :p

I've done my best, but it looks like it's not going to happen. I'll just have to start over, and be better about keeping backups about.

I may try again when I'm less frustrated with it all, but for now, I'm looking on it as starting a fresh notebook. :-)
