Movie Rant: Bon Cap Bad Cop

awanderingbardOne of the dvds I got for Christmas was Bon Cop Bad Cop, which is a Canadian film that I absolutely adore.

Bon Cop Bad Cop is the age old "unlikely partners" premise with a few changes that makes it highly entertaining and unique. When the body of a man is found hanging over the sign indicating the border between Ontario and Quebec (literally half in each province), Ontario cop Martin Ward (Colm Feore) and Quebec cop David Bouchard (Patrick Huard) are forced to work together to solve the case. Their methods are different and neither quite understands the other's culture. Both main characters are bilingual, so the dialogue is as well. One may ask a question in one language and it is answered in the other, or switch languages mid-sentence. This is handled with subtitles (for the French dialogue in the English version and for the English dialogue in the French version), and not only manages to be coherent but hilarious as well.
The movie is essentially a comedy, but its ending is as good a cops and robbers one as I have seen. It also has some great dramatic moments and excellent performances by the two leads. The supporting cast is wonderful, a stand out for me is 14 year-old Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse and a hilarious cameo by Canadian comedian Rick Mercer.
As I said above, the production values are high and I liked the blue-green tint to the colouring of the film (similar to the flashback scenes of Wolverine in X2). I'd definitely recommend this film to any Canadian and if you can handle subtitles and a plot revolving around Hockey, any non-Canadians as well. I don't know how available it is outside of Canada, but if you can get your hands on it, give it a try.
