Went looking for memes to quell my boredom and found this one.

The Writing Meme:

What’s the last thing you wrote?

My 'hugs, cuddles and kisses' fic for [livejournal.com profile] dresdenflashfic

Was it any good?

It went off in a completely different direction than I planned, but I'm happy with the way it turned out.

What’s the first thing you wrote that you still have?

Probably the story I wrote in Grade 4 about dancing. I got a very good mark on it.

Write poetry?

Only when forced for school.

Angsty poetry?

Depends on what the assignment is.

Favourite genre of writing?

To read, I like historical fiction the most. For writing, I guess sci fi/fantasy is pretty much what I stick to.

Most fun character you’ve ever created?

Hmmm. I certainly have the most fun writing Fay Dresden. I have a soft spot for Dr. Forrester, as well.

Most annoying character you’ve ever created?

I hope most of my characters aren't annoying. I guess Jeremy Blake or Tattoo since they're my only baddies.

Best plot you’ve ever created?

Somnus, I think.

Coolest plot twist you’ve ever created?

I don't think I have any plot twists. I'm still working on how to write 'good' plot.

How often do you get writer’s block?

Not often. If I get stuck on something, I move to something else until inspiration hits again.

Write fan fiction?

Almost exclusively.

Do you type or write by hand?

I type, because my fingers move as fast as brain so I don't lose anything. I do keep notebooks beside my bed for notes. Before I sleep is when I have my best ideas and I can't shut my brain off until I've jotted them down.

Do you save everything you write?

Yes. I have way too many stories that will never be finished, but I can't bear to delete them.

Do you ever go back to an idea after you’ve abandoned it?

Most ideas that I abandon get reworked and twisted and used later on, I think. I don't discount anything until the story is done and even then I've used bits and pieces of unfinished stories in new ones.

What’s your favourite thing you’ve written?

I think the creation myth I wrote for Grade 10 history. I'll post it one of these days.

What’s everyone else’s favourite story that you’ve written?

Cliffhanger seems to be the story I get the most comments and favourites on.

Do you ever show people your work?

I post my fanfiction, obviously, and everything I write I read aloud to Amalie at some point. I used to blush bright red while I did it, but now that I know she isn't going to laugh, I'm fine. I started reading to my friend Stacey as well, and blushed profusely for that too. God knows what will happen if I ever have to do a book reading. Ama is great for pointing out plot holes and errors in logic and throwing in lines that are great.

Did you ever write a novel?

Nope, but I'd like to.

Ever written romance or angsty teen drama?

I'm not much for angst in general, writing wise. I have done romance for Harry/Murphy a bit, though.

What’s your favourite setting for your characters?

I like describing how someone's house is decorated, because it says so much about them. I don't think I use any one setting more than another, except for Harry's place, because most of those stories have to start there or visit there at some point.

How many writing projects are you working on right now?

Oh, several. I have an original story I'm working on and off on and then all sorts of fanfictions as I get ideas for things.

Do you want to write for a living?

I think so. It's my current desire, anyway. If I can, I'd love to.

Have you ever won an award for your writing?

No.

Ever written anything in script or play format?

Yes, two full-length plays for the highschool drama club and a short skit for Christmas.

What are your five favourite words?

Flirtatiously, facetious, chrysanthemum, benevolent, subterfuge

Do you ever write based on yourself?

A lot of my characters have traits that are based on my own and I use a lot of my experiences in my stories.

What character have you created that is most like yourself?

I made an RPG character that was purposely based on myself, so her, probably.

Where do you get ideas for your characters?

Myself, people around me, celebrities and pictures all mixed up together.

Do you ever write based on your dreams?

I sometimes have dreams about my stories, or get story elements from dreams but I've never written anything directly based on a dream.

Do you favour happy endings, sad endings or cliff-hangers?

Happy endings, definitely, but when I'm the reader, I love an ending that makes your stomach drop a little when you realize something new at the last moment. "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl comes to mind.

Have you ever written based on an artwork you’ve seen?

I wrote an internal monologue based on a Waterhouse picture for a school assignment, once.

Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?

We were never taught grammar in school, so I mostly wing it as I go along. I'm certainly not concerned with spelling until the end when I spellcheck. I mostly worry about making it clear what's happening and using words appropriately.

Ever write anything in chatspeak (how r u?)

Not unless the characters are IMing each other. I sometimes use it as a joke in blog entries. Mostly I find it annoying when others do it.

Entirely in L337?

Nay.

Was that question appalling and unwriterly?

No. I think chatspeak can be used to effect sometimes, but I don't want a whole story written in it.

Does music help you write?

I usually turn music off if I'm writing, unless it's instrumental or in a foreign language, since the words being sung interfere with the words I'm trying to write. Movie soundtracks are great for writing, though, and music sometimes inspires me to write.

Quote something you’ve written. Whatever pops into your head.

Here's a bit from a play I wrote with some friends in highschool. It's a parody of Romeo & Juliet which modernizes the language (basically I read out the Shakespeare and we translated what it was saying and then rewrote it in English) and sometimes uses direct quotes and sometimes uses direct translation for the sake of comedy. Basically to spell out what was happening in extremely obvious ways. It was written to be done with a small cast on a small budget and was a sort of 'sequel' to the Macbeth play we'd done the year before. Unfortunately, we never got a chance to perform it.

The Balcony Scene:

Romeo: Look! It's Juliet! She's so pretty. And shiny. Like the sun, almost. Only less blinding.
Juliet: Sigh! (languishes)
Romeo: Oh, she's gonna speak...No she's not. I should go talk to her. But no, I'm shy. Wait a minute! I'm not shy! I'm a flirt. And she's hot. Here goes.
Juliet: Ah me.
Romeo: Oh, speak again bright angel. The way she speaks! It reminds me of angels and floaty things.
Juliet: Romeo, Romeo. Why do you have to be a stupid Montague? Leave your family and come be with me! Or if you won't, I'll just stop being a Capulet.
Romeo: Should I hear more or shall I speak at this? It's sounding pretty good so far.
Juliet: The only thing I hate about you is your name. Which is a shame because it's such a nice name. Romeo Montague. So much better than County Paris. What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Well...maybe not if they were called skunk cabbages. Oh Romeo. Take all of me! I'm yours!
Romeo: Really?
Juliet: AHHH! What are you and who are you doing?
Romeo: I can't tell you because you hate my name. And I hate it because you hate it.
Juliet: Oh, I've only met you once before, but I would know you anywhere. Art thou not Romeo and a Montague?
Romeo: Neither fair maid, if either thee dislike.
Juliet: So, you're not Romeo?
Romeo: ...Well, I AM Romeo. But not really. I'm incognito.

Feel free to snatch if you are so inclined.

Fuckin' signed on most of this, but especially the typing one. It's so hard to write when my brain moves faster than my fingers. I'm halfway through a chapter and I'm still writing down the beginning. V. annoying.
Pinched it, btw. (http://www.scribbld.net/users/tigerkat24/13535.html#cutid1)

... That's longer that I expected and I'm so doing it the next time I'm bored. It'll eat up enough time to entertain me.

Okay, I feel kinda silly doing this, but since you write so much and so well, I thought you might be interested in muse writing communities? I write TV Murphy at [Unknown site tag] and would love a TV Harry to hang out with. since joining I've gotten a really great understanding of the character and written a lot of great stuff. I just thought it might be something you'd be interested in. Feel free to ignore me being a dork.

I appreciate the offer and it sounds rather cool, but I gave up RPGing earlier this year and I know my best RPG friend would be mad if I joined something similar after she has been trying to coerce me back to hers for awhile now. :D That said, however, if you ever want to chat about character or need a Harry for something small, I'm glad to offer assistance. And if I change my mind about joining, I'll let you know. :D
