Date: 2007-09-09 01:43 am (UTC)I just loved Harry's internal monologue - like the ones he does during the show. I loved the narration and the little quips about him. It just appealed to me and as I read the books, I started to like the character even more, because I could add those little things to him from the books that weren't, or couldn't be shown, on the TV show. Paul Blackthorne owning the character didn't hurt either. :-D
b. One of his/her best traits.
I think Harry's best trait is his ability to spring back after a blow. He doesn't let the bastards get him down and even if he's about to die, he isn't going down without a well-placed quip or two.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
Probably his anger. You can see a lot of it in him even as a kid, that righteous indignation and the 'I'm right, shut up' quality to him. It's mellowed out of him as an adult a bit, but it obviously gets him in trouble still. 'I scare the hell out of myself sometimes' pretty much sums it up. :D
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Tremendously easy, actually. Harry just works for me, which is why I think I write from his point of view so much. Book!Harry I find much harder to write than TV!Harry. Book!Harry has a very unique sense of humour that I don't feel I could do justice too. It darker than TV!Harry's. In any case, whatever I want Harry to do, he does pretty much without complaint.
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character.
From Rescue, Mai's POV:
I don't like Dresden. There's too much Morningway in him and Morningways are always trouble. Nearly a century of trouble, maybe more. Maggie Morningway was almost an exception. She would have been, if she could have stopped that stupid need to fix things. The same need that drove Dresden into freeing a couple dozen kids by trading himself for their place, when he should have just contacted the council and let us handle it. Dresden always has one foot in stupid and one foot in heroic and I'm left with the mess.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.
As long as Harry keeps doing stuff in my mind, I'll keep writing it down. :-D

Date: 2007-09-09 01:57 am (UTC)I totally agree with a, b, and c, esp the "I scare the hell out of myself sometimes," line. As far as d goes, you make it look easy, anyway!

Date: 2007-09-09 03:34 am (UTC)Murphy didn't register on my radar much at first. I was too busy being in love with Harry to notice her and I was disappointed that she and Harry didn't have the same friendship they have in the books. TV!Murphy is more of an obstacle in Harry's way than a partner in helping solve his problems. I think they mentioned this in the Rules of Engagement commentary - it wasn't MEANT to be a 'buddy' show originally, then Murphy became more important. Once I saw What About Bob? and was given context for her fear of what Harry can do, I enjoyed her character much more. I think
b. One of his/her best traits.
Murphy's best trait is definitely her sense of right and wrong. She's a cop, she's THE cop, and nothing is going to get in the way of her doing her job. She doesn't take any crap from anyone and she would bend the rules a little to make sure justice is served.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
Denial. I'm sure Harry wants to bash his head against the wall sometimes with dealing with her. I understand where the denial comes from, but it isn't helping her do her job any better.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Murphy comes and goes for me, depending on the situation. When I write her from Harry's POV, she's harder to manage because she's putting up a front for him. So what she says and what she actually means are two different things, so sometimes you have to make her the bitch without context for it, because Harry doesn't know what she's thinking. When I write from Murphy's POV, it's much easier, because I can put her thoughts on the page and explain her better. Plus, I enjoy writing Harry as seen from the outside and Murphy's the best spectator for that.
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character.
I'm quite proud of Pas de Deux (http://awanderingbard.livejournal.com/9083.html). :D
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.
Harry needs a Murphy, so she'll definitely be around for awhile still.
