Opinion time!

If you were updating Poirot and Hastings to fit into the Sherlock 'verse (which I am attempting, somewhat unsuccessfully to do), would you expect them to call each other Poirot and Hastings or Hercule and Arthur?

Also, The Moustache: required or not? I mean, it's sort of essential to Poirot as a character, but it's also very, very not in fashion at the moment. I can have him sport it as a sort of eccentricity (which is a Poirot thing to do), but I don't know if it works.

Thoughts, questions, concerns?

I strangely expect Poirot to call Hastings Arthur but for Hastings to call Poirot by his surname. Kind of like Moss vs. Roy.

Also, I think the mustache is paramount and can totally pass as an eccentricity.

Also? SQUEE!! Modern crossover FTW!

Oh, I had thought of it as an either or thing, but your way makes perfect sense and I like it much better. Hastings is totally public school enough to call people by their last names.

The Moustache is paramount, agreed. I just wasn't sure if I could get away with it, but hopefully if I lampshade it enough, it will work.

Now if I could only write the damn thing. I've figured out Hastings' and Poirot's modern backstories, but John and Hastings won't shut up and I can't get Poirot and Sherlock to work with each other. Which I suppose is in character, but not helpful to my word fairy.

I would totally just give in and write that, except for the prompt I was trying to write was for Sherlock and Poirot, with no mention of their sidekicks.

At the moment, it's more like "John and Hastings Bitch about their Respective Geniuses and Discuss the Fact that They are Essentially the Same Character". I mean, I know Christie was going for a Watson for her hero, but it's a bit silly how similar this two guys are. Which is probably why they won't shut up.

I think they would call one another by their surnames - they strike me as prefering that layer of formality.

also, the moustache, most definate.

Yeah, for some reason I can't picture Hastings calling Poirot 'Hercule'. Or Poirot enjoying being called 'Hercule' for that matter.

Moustache it is!

now I'm picturing someone saying "Hercule. Herc. Hercules!"

though I'm not sure if that would be said by Sherlock or The Doctor. :)
