I picture Sherlock as having a very precise, streamlined look. He likes to look what he considers to be 'proper', but I don't think he would bother with things like cufflinks because it would be too fussy. He doesn't really do bold, it's all very dark and plain, but stylish.
In Lost for Words, Sherlock goes to a concert with Mummy, and that was originally earlier in the story and a bigger deal than it ended up being. I had him needing help with his tie and cufflinks (needed because it was a fancy concert and Mummy insisted) and John questioning him about the cufflinks and tie pin. I had Mycroft getting the ring his wears and his pocket watch from their dad, and Sherlock inheriting the cufflinks and tie pin, which he never wears unless he has to. /ramble
