Made Mum watch the first Star Trek reboot movie, and she 'really enjoyed' it. She also enjoyed Captain America. We're going to try The Avengers next, when we have a chunk of time to kill (that thing is long). We're also reading the Sherlock Holmes stories aloud. I am on a roll with fandom conversions.

Next stop...er...I don't know what's left...

Yay for mom!!!!! Have you watched any Sherlock/Sherlock Holmes with her? (RDJ's movies, the Jeremy Brett Granada series, the BBC ones....)

We've watched Sherlock, and Elementary and the Ritchie movies, but not Granada. I've seen some of them, but only on YouTube. Our PBS station shows them, but at really inconvenient times. I think she's a bit Holmes out at the moment, I'm not sure if could throw another adaption at her.

Excellent point. Maybe time for some Classic Doctor Who? Usually those are easyish to find at libraries and things.

I tried New Who and it was no go, unfortunately, so I don't know if Old Who would fly. I really should try Old Who, though. I've only seen a few episodes. I don't even know if our library has DVDs. I'm afraid of the librarian, I haven't been in about ten years.

Classic is quite different than New... it's more quaint, less showy. There's less running and explosions and no CGI. There's quite a bit available online, I think here has the best selection: http://www.dailymotion.com/playlists/user/tardismedia, although this is nice too

I really like Two's serials (not many survive, unfortunately) and just think there's a nice quality to the black and white ones in general.

Ugh, sorry your library isn't any good, that's so disappointing!

Thanks!

I remember not finding the daleks scary until I saw one of One's serials with them, then I got it. It was scarier in black and white for some reason. And I've seen one serial with Four, with Sarah Jane and...Harry? And Three's first serial, and The Five Doctors. My friend had a bunch of stuff taped on VHS, so what I got was rather random.

I liked Harry, he was such a 'proper' gentleman and sweet with Sarah Jane. Three's first appearance is kind of fun, its the first DW to be in color and it also set up a lot of things that'd be important later.

I've only managed to watch bits and bobs as well. Some are better than others (not surprisingly) but overall, they're nice ways to spend some time.

I was very fond of Harry too, what I a saw of him. I seem to be drawn to medical characters, though. I like me some doctors.

I really liked One, too. I know it was due to extenuating circumstances, but I found his occasional word confusion very endearing.

Six was the only Doctor I didn't like much, but that might have had something to do with his main companion, Peri, who wasn't that great and the coat he wore. There's a serial "The Two Doctors" with Two and Jamie and Six and Peri that wasn't bad, but then again, Two and Jamie are my favorites.

Maybe Thor? It gives some history to Loki's craziness in Avengers.

Or just really confuses motives since Avengers!Loki has a very different memory of the events in Thor.

We've done Thor, and rewatched at the cottage, so she is going in with everything except The Hulk movies. She has done her Marvel 101 course.

Yeah, I don't think Loki was right in the head by the time the Avengers rolled around. I mean, more so. Whedon says he got messed up falling through the abyss at the end of Thor. There's also the theory that he's brainwashed, too, due to his eyes being blue in The
Avengers and green in Thor. But I don't know, maybe Hiddleston just got sick of the contacts.

I love this very simple and most likely true explanation. It reminds me of how Nick Hornby rolls his eyes at Bob Dylan fans who dissect every single lyric of his and jump on how since this word doesn't rhyme with this word it must have some super-deep meaning. Hornby's explanation is basically, "I think at some point Bob Dylan was just like, 'Fuck it. Close enough.'"

I felt this way every time we had to dissect something for English, because I kept thinking 'if people were doing this to something I wrote, I would think they were nuts'. I mean, maybe they did write with the deeper meaning in mind, but I know for myself that things that end up having layers in my stories are more accident than design.

I also think there's an element of fan girls going 'but he's not evil, he's just misunderstood! He's brainwashed, he doesn't know what he's doing!'
