Man, finding gifts that a family of geniuses might exchange is harder than I thought. You'd think they'd be easier, considering they have very specific interests, but then you remember they probably own most things associated with them, or built them. Or invented them.

And you can't go sentimental at all.

No wonder Christmas dinners are so awkward.

Seriously! And whatever it is you get them, they can probably already get themselves. So, if it's Sherlock buying something for Mycroft...maybe events that they can go to together (or is that too sentimental)? I loved when in "Cold Blood" they went to a concert together, even if Sherlock said Mycroft was spying and Mycroft said it was entirely coincidental.

Or perhaps Sherlock would allow temporary voluntary access to something Mycroft's been wanting (a-okay cameras in the flat for a week?)? Perhaps the promise that Sherlock will show up to something/do Mycroft a favor that he wouldn't normally do? Guh, you're right, it is hard.

At the moment, I've gone with the notion that the Holmes brothers use a complicated bartering system of favours as presents, which goes along with your second idea.

The problem is what Mummy might get for her boys, and what she might get for them. She can be sentimental, of course, but it wouldn't be appreciated. I can sort of skim over most of it, but I'd like to mention a few specific things they received. I think I have what I need now. I just need something Mycroft might give her. I didn't think she'd be hard to shop for, but she is! LOL

Stupid fictional characters.

LOL! I'm glad you have some ideas, because the age-old problem of what to get one's mother for holidays is one that haunts me every Christmas and birthday! But I have an out in that I can get stupidly sentimental and Mycroft probably can't, at least not often. And of course what would make Mummy happiest might just be seeing all her sons be happy. Stupid fictional characters indeed!

Fhew, finally got it all sorted out, after hours of searching. I seriously have never worked this hard finding things for a character, except maybe picking an engagement ring for Sarah. At least in this case my work will show, rather than just be headcanon.

And of course what would make Mummy happiest might just be seeing all her sons be happy.

Yes, this is very true! I'm sure she's very glad when her boys get together and she can be motherly in one place. I imagine she does a lot of individual parenting, considering how antisocial they all are.

Now to finish off this beast of a story, and make it look nice. It got very, very long on me.

Ooh, that's fantastic! Congrats! (And I admit to being selfishly pleased it's gotten long on you, but sorry for the work!)

Hee! Thanks! The only problem with long is that I worry I'm rambling. Hopefully it will flow all right in the end.
