Me: *eating cereal, pauses* Do you suppose you could use Sherlock's coat to blanket pull him?
Mum: *typing an e-mail, no hesitation* Oh yeah, for sure.

This is also the woman who very thoughtfully debated with me about whether or not Gladstone would be best to stay with Sherlock when Abby first comes home from the hospital, or stay with John and meet her right away, and suggested that when he does meet her, it should be at John's house, and not Sherlock's because 'I don't think Sherlock would be very happy about having a baby around and the dog would pick up on that'.

It's nice to have a fellow geek so near at hand.

Ha! I am so horrified but intrigued by that thought. I just can't see him in the part at all, but I'd be interested. Him and Benedict, the Cheekbone Squad, solving crimes with floppy hair and long limbs.

He nearly got the role but Moffat and Gatiss thought he was a bit too energetic and flaily to be a good Watson against the sort of Holmes they were putting together. Thus they decided to start looking a older actors.

And then Moffat had a bit of a light bulb moment for Doctor Who. "Energetic, flaily, speed talker...wait..."

I sort of wonder if Benedict would have gone for a more controlled Sherlock if Matt had been a more bouncy Watson, though. I know Ben said his interpretation of the role changed when Martin auditioned, so I wonder if he would have modulated it with Matt, too. I think Matt would have been more of the traditional 'comic relief' Watson, a bit silly. Martin managed to make John fairly capable, if not as a clever.

I feel like a Watson played by Matt Smith would be much more inclined to follow Sherlock's mad ideas with little complaint. Even if Martin Freeman's Watson ultimately goes with Sherlock, he at least had many moments of "Are you insane?! No! No, that's...but it's Christmas! No! Okay, fine..."

Yeah, I think Matt Smith's Watson would have been more of an admiring fanboy, too. The fact that Martin is older than Benedict gives the relationship some balance, a little bit. John is older and wiser, while also being admiring and a pushover. If he were younger, it might come off more as a crush, maybe. Does that make sense? Like a mentor-pupil more than a very odd friendship.

Yes, the age gap does balance out the relationship a bit. Sherlock is clearly cleverer but John has knowledge you just get from living your life that Sherlock hasn't quite gotten yet.

And John had a life on fast-forward from being in the army, too. He has more experience than most men his age do. He's world-weathered, where Sherlock just likes to think he is.

That's the other thing--I'm not sure if I could buy Matt Smith as an ex-soldier.
