Quick question on Agent Carter canon, though more of an opinion than anything else:

In Season One, Jarvis says he was 'aide' to a General in Budapest. I assumed that he meant 'aide-de-camp', which is a sort of secretarial position, but I recently saw Jarvis mentioned on TVtropes as a 'batman', and that actually makes a lot more sense (batman was a servant to an officer, in charge of running errands, driving him, taking care of his clothing, digging his foxhole in battle, etc.). Did the AC writers use 'aide' so not to confuse American audiences, who probably would have gone to Bruce Wayne at the use of batman? It just makes more sense to me for him to be a batman, and go into life as a butler (historically, batmans often followed their officers into domestic service), than to be an aide-de-camp, which was a very prestigious position, and then have all the skills to be a butler later on.

Any thoughts?

Also, while I'm here, I said I was going to make some Ana Jarvis icons and I did. If any wants them, please feel free to use. Credit to [livejournal.com profile] songstressicons and/or [livejournal.com profile] citadel_icons if you'd like, but it's not necessary. Also, I'm trying to get the hang of a new graphics program, so if anyone would like any other Agent Carter icons, I'm happy to make them if you give me a picture or subject.

I can definitely believe they changed it to 'aide' because we Americans would never not think of Bruce Wayne when hearing 'batman.' Although, I feel the show would have had a great joke on their hands with Jarvis having to painstakingly explain what a batman is when people get confused and then deciding to just say 'aide.'

Lovely icons!

To be fair, he was speaking to Peggy, who would know what one was. But yeah, Jarvis and Howard probably had that discussion at some point.

Howard: How many bats does he need? Does he beat people with them?
Jarvis: Pardon me? Oh! Good heavens, none at all. No, never. There are no bats involved at all. A bat is a bag, a saddle bag. It's archaic. I just valet him.
Howard: Okay, good, 'cause where I grew up, let me tell you, that was a profession you could probably have. And hey, one I could still use, actually.

My brain has decided it needed to write Jarvis and Ana meeting, so that's fic number a billion that I'm working on right now. I still have no idea how their timeline works, but I'm going with the idea that they met, knew each other for three weeks, separated, and Jarvis stole a plane and came to get her in 1941. Otherwise we have a huge gap of three years either before Jarvis was caught and put on trial, or that he waited around for three years to start working for Howard after he got him off the hook.

Lovely icons!

Thanks! My old graphics programme doesn't come with a Mac version, so I've been playing around with substitutes. I added a couple more icons. I found some good caps of Ana smiling, which I couldn't find last night.

EDITED: to fix a sentence I later read back and even I didn't know what I was trying to say.

I found a nice promo image of Ana when I was looking for pictures for icons, so: Ana and Hesper (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/AWanderingMinstrel/Photo%20Manip/Daemons/AnaHesper.png").

Also, as I was writing Ana and Jarvis meeting, I went...'wait, cheerful, ginger, curly haired shop girl meets polite, shy, kind man and sells him things...' and I think I might accidentally have made Nora and Steve Modern Day Ana and Jarvis...

I wrote a little SuperKids fic. It was going to be longer, but then it turned out I was done, so here, have some comment fic.

Good Manners

There was only one thing that Mom was more polite about than Dad. JJ was eight years old, and knew all about manners--more than anyone else his age, except maybe for Winnie--and Dad had a lot of rules--even about things that didn’t even exist any more. When it came to visiting Uncle Bucky, though, Dad thought it was totally okay to just show up and let yourself in. Mom thought people should call before they visit. Dad said that he and Uncle Bucky went back and forth all the time when they were kids, and Mom pointed out that they had been living in the same building, not streets away, and that open door policies weren’t practical any more. Dad said that it didn’t matter if they were streets away, and he didn’t care if Winnie showed up, so why would Bucky care if JJ showed up? And Mom said she didn’t mind that Winnie showed up either, or that Uncle Bucky showed up, but she really would prefer, sometimes, if she had advanced warning.

JJ had decided the right person to ask about it was Uncle Bucky, who had told him, very seriously, that JJ was always welcome at his place, any time of day, and he should never, ever feel he couldn’t come there.

“Don’t stand on ceremony, JJ,” he said. “You never have to ask.”

He’d even given JJ a key.

Which was good, because today JJ needed to go to Uncle Bucky’s, and he didn’t know if Uncle Bucky would even be there, so he was glad he could let himself in.

He swiped some blood from his eye as he stuck the key in the lock, and turned it, pushing the door open and leaving a smudge of blood on the glass. He’d have to clean that before he left. Dad would be upset if he left the place a mess. That was not good manners.

He put his school bag down, yelping as his arm wrenched. His wrist might be sprained. Until about five minutes ago, he’d been too angry to be in pain, but now he wasn’t angry anymore--or not as much--so now every punch and kick and blow he’d got he was feeling, and it didn’t feel good.

He hobbled to the kitchen, so he could wash his face. He had the water running, and he didn’t have his hearing aid in, so he didn’t know Uncle Bucky had come in until his hand was on JJ’s shoulder. JJ jumped and spun around and instinctively punched him in the stomach. Uncle Bucky didn’t even flinch and JJ’s knuckles hurt.

“Oh, kid,” Uncle Bucky said, in sympathy. He was muffled, but JJ could hear him well enough, especially with the lip-reading Sherlock had been teaching him.

“I’m okay,” JJ said, quickly. “It’s not that bad.”

Uncle Bucky turned the water off, and grabbed a cloth from the counter, pressing it to the cut on JJ’s forehead. “It’s that bad, JJ,” he said. “It’s definitely that bad. Where’s Winnie?”

“She takes a different bus when she goes to Joan’s,” JJ said.

“She’s supposed to stick with you,” Uncle Bucky said, frowning. “She knows better than to leave you alone like this. Barnes’ and Rogers’ stick together, she knows that.”

“She wasn’t with me,” JJ said. “It happened after I got off the bus. Don’t be mad at her, she would have helped if she was there. But I didn’t need help. I was fine.”

Uncle Bucky moved JJ to a kitchen chair and made him sit down, pulling back the hood of JJ’s sweatshirt. He’d had his hood up to hide some of the blood, so people wouldn’t stop him on the street and try to help him, and then maybe take him home. He didn’t want to go home yet. Dad would freak out, and try to be Captain America and fix everything.

Uncle Bucky grabbed the First Aid kit, and pulled up a chair facing JJ, opening up the kit on the table and starting with the cut over JJ’s eye. “Tell me what happened,” he said.

“There were three kids bothering a girl on the bus,” JJ explained. “And I told the driver, and she told them to stop, but they didn’t. The girl listens to music all the time. I think she’s autistic and it keeps her calm--do you know what autistic is?”

Sometimes you had to explain normal things to Dad and Uncle Bucky because they’d missed them.

“I’m following you,” Uncle Bucky said, with a nod.

“They kept pulling her earphones out,” JJ went on. “And she was getting really upset. And so I told them to stop, but they didn’t, so I made her switch seats with me. Then they knocked my hearing aid out.”

Uncle Bucky’s metal hand made a clicking sound from a fist he was making. He looked down at it when JJ did, and his fingers opened again, and he put something stingy on JJ’s forehead.

“But I just put it in my pocket, and they stopped bothering me,” JJ carried on, quickly, so Uncle Bucky didn’t try to be Captain America either. “But when we got off the bus, they started following me home, and calling me names, and I was ignoring them--I promise I was. I know I’m suppose to ignore them, and I was. But then they tripped me, and they pushed me into an alley, so I had to fight to defend myself. It’s okay to do that. Dad said I can do that.”

Uncle Bucky sighed. “Of course he did,” he said. “I don’t suppose you thought about running?”

Oh. Yeah. That was something JJ could have done, actually. He was pretty quick. He could have run.

“No,” he admitted. You didn’t run. You stood your ground. Dad never ran.

“Where’s your hearing aid now?” Uncle Bucky said. “No wonder you didn’t hear me calling you when you came in.”

“One of them took it out of my pocket and stepped on it,” JJ said. “It’s broken.”

Uncle Bucky got to his feet. “What are their names?” he asked, in a deep voice that made JJ’s spine cold.

“I don’t know,” he lied. “It’s not a big deal, Uncle Bucky. Please, don’t make a fuss.”

“JJ, you’re missing a tooth,” Uncle Bucky said.

“It was loose already! It was a baby tooth. I’ve been wiggling it all day.”
“They broke your hearing aid.”
“I have an extra one at home. Uncle Tony always makes me extra ones in different colours.”
“They ganged up on you three to one in an alley and gave you a black eye!”
“I found a garbage can lid, and I blocked, like, half of the blows!”

All of the anger went out of Uncle Bucky at once, like a balloon that had been popped, and he started to laugh, first a chuckle, then a really deep belly laugh, his head shaking.

“Kid, you have no hope at all,” he said. “Genetics are a curse.” He got out his phone, and started texting.

“Who are you sending that to?” JJ said.

“Your dad,” Uncle Bucky said.

“No!” JJ said. He jumped to his feet, and tried to pull the phone away. “Please! I know I’m in trouble, and I promise I’ll tell him later, but I just want to clean up befor-mmmmmmm--” Uncle Bucky’s hand covered his mouth, so he couldn’t talk any more.

“I’m not ratting you out, I’m buying you time.” Uncle Bucky showed him the screen. “Your dad will worry if you don’t come home when you should.”

‘Borrowed your kid. Will bring him back when I’m done,’ was all the message said.

JJ relaxed. “Thank you,” he said, but it was muffled to ‘mmmmmmmoo’ under Uncle Bucky’s hand.

“Barnes’ and Rogers’ stick together,” Uncle Bucky said. “Sit back down. I need to check you for a concussion.”

I'm very late to commenting on this fic. I read it around when you first posted it but I finally have a few minutes to re-read it (yessss!!) and comment!

For some reason I kind of chuckled at how super-serious Bucky was about JJ never having to ask about if it would be okay to come over. Maybe I just saw it really clearly in my head. Also, the idea of Bucky channeling his Winter Soldier self to scare the crap out of some kids is also kind of funny in a "haha, but no, don't actually do it" kind of way.

This was a sweet fic. The tradition of a Barnes cleaning up a Rogers still goes on.

I've been kind of tinkering around with a fic between JJ and Elliot. I keep wondering if I'm writing JJ properly and it's basically me asking myself, "Is he being polite? Is he being too polite? If the answer is yes, then it's probably right."

It was originally going to be longer, and have more advice giving, but in the end, it just came to a nice stop and ended up being about apples not falling far from trees. I just wanted some Bucky and JJ being bros action, because I have in my head that JJ tests out all his problem on Bucky before bringing them to Steve, just because he's a little worried about Steve being disappointed in him. Not that Steve ever is or would be, but when your dad is Captain America, you kinda feel like you aren't living up to the family biz. Bucky is there to be like 'let me tell you how stupid your dad was!' and JJ leaves feeling much more confident about telling Steve about his mistakes.

Hehe! JJ is polite before anything, that is 100% accurate. JJ wants to be helpful, and he wants to be polite, and he wants you to be really comfortable and having a good time. I have a feeling he'd be good at settling into the rhythm of a conversation, and being boisterous if that's what's going on, but settling down if the other person was quieter. Though probably chatty, and making up for the other person not talking.

Nice to hear from you! *huggles*

Thank you! It's nice to be back and talking fandom with you! *hugs*

Bucky is there to be like 'let me tell you how stupid your dad was!' and JJ leaves feeling much more confident about telling Steve about his mistakes.

Hee! That totally makes sense. Bucky is literally the only person alive who can bring the Captain America image down.

Bucky: Want to know what Steve did on a dare? Seriously. Just a dare. No money was at stake.

Steve: The principle was at stake!

Bucky: Yeah, the principle of whether or not you could jump into a half frozen pond and not die.

JJ wants to be helpful, and he wants to be polite, and he wants you to be really comfortable and having a good time.

The fic is a re-working of Elliot being sort of weirded and slightly upset after meeting Winnie's ex-boyfriend from before. JJ is trying to be supportive but also trying to be respectful of not telling Elliot anything Winnie wouldn't be comfortable with since she's not there. Elliot stopped complaining about the ex though because he could just see on JJ's face how hard he's trying to straddle both lines and finding it hard. But still totally committed!

Hee! That sounds like something I had in my original novel-length 'Steve and Nora meet fic'

“I thought Victor wasn’t allowed on the living room couch,” Bucky called.

Steve came in from the kitchen and handed him a beer, having given up on the popcorn. Again. “He’s not,” he said.

Bucky pointed to the couch, where Victor was curled up in a happy ball.

“It was thundering, he was nervous,” Steve said.

“He’s deaf,” Bucky said.

“He was afraid of the lightning,” Steve said.

Bucky grinned and shook his head. “You haven’t changed from when you were seven and trying to untie tin cans from dogs’ tails,” he said. “And getting the pulp beat out of you by the Italian kids who’d tied them there in the first place.”

“The Fabrizis were horrible people,” Steve said. “Someone had to stand up to them.”

“Yeah, all three foot nothing of you really scared them to death,” Bucky said.

JJ is trying to be supportive but also trying to be respectful of not telling Elliot anything Winnie wouldn't be comfortable with since she's not there.

Oh, yeah, that's very JJ. He'd also probably trying not to be mean about the ex, but at the same time not trying to natter about him too much and make Elliot feel worse.

JJ: He wasn't that smart. No, that's not fair, he was actually really smart. And he had nice hair.
Elliot: Oh.
JJ: But nice hair isn't everything.
Elliot: Uh-huh.
JJ: But his hair was really nice.
