The Fandom Love Meme:
List ten things that you adore/love/cherish about a fandom you play in. Any ten things that you believe makes your fandom awesome. Don't be shy and rejoice in the good vibes!
The Dresden Files
1. It is a show of firsts for me - the first time I was ever compelled to write fanfiction (well, fanfiction I felt comfortable posting) and the first time I've ever 'shipped anyone (Harry/Murphy).
2. It is a fandom that produces consistently interesting and good fanfic. In most fandoms you get those people who don't really care about being in character or write something 'at lik, 2am on a sugar high, lol', or whatever, but Dresden fans all seem to have a good handle on who these people are and find interesting ways to explore the 'verse beyond what we know for sure.
3. The show introduced me to the books, which then made me more interested in the show. I think both mediums really support each other and allow room to share ideas and build on each other.
4. It has Terrence Mann in it. Hi Terrence Mann! I haven't seen you since your Pimpernel days. You sure do sing pretty! Plus, Paul Blackthorne, who I want to huggle all the time. Plus, lots of Canadian actors who I randomly see in Advil commercials and one liners on sitcoms (Hi Scott's mum! Hi Susan!).
5. It has Murphy, who is kickass while still remaining a woman, if you know what I mean. It seems like shows feel the need to either have the woman who lets men walk all over her or the woman who hates men and tirades about how much men are trying to put women down. Murphy is neither. She's just a very capable cop, who happens to be a woman. Good on you, Mr. Butcher et al.
6. The forces who are in opposition to Harry (the Council, Mai, Morgan, sometimes Murphy) are not the 'dumb cops' of detective fiction. They are capable, intelligent people who Harry genuinely has to watch out for, rather than the meddling inspector who can't seem to solve a crime despite being at the top of his profession.
7. Everyone I've met so far has been very, very nice. I have yet to have a snarky comment left on any of my stories. That's rare, I think, especially when many of my stories take place in an alt. future (mes mini!Dresdens) with a partner who is not Murphy. I was fully expecting to get flamed for that and all I've gotten is compliments.
8. It seems to inspire a lot of diversity of interpretations. Everyone has their own take on some aspect of the show (Murphy's daughter, Harry's parents, Bob's past, Kirmani and Morgan, etc.), which makes for a lot of fun debate and sharing of ideas. I like that it's ambiguous in that way, unlike some fandoms where everything is written in stone and nobody is open to different takes.
9. I was listening to the commentary for the 'Waitress' movie the other day and they were talking about how the story isn't afraid to be both sad and funny at the same time. I think that's true of the Dresden Files too. No matter how sad, or scary or angsty or tragic or dark it gets, there's always some humour still there, because life can be sad and funny at the same time.
10. The universe is a set-up in a way that makes it great for fic writing. You can have epic, detective type stories, or you can have simple stories about mundane things and it all works and is interesting. Consequently, I get easily inspired by things going on around me. Normally, putting together furniture wouldn't be a terribly interesting story, but when you have a wizard and a ghost doing it, it is.

#5. I hadn't really thought about it, but you are so right. Too often women are the 'Damsel in Distress' or the "strong selfcentered bitch' with no middle ground. Murphy's strong, but will accept saving if she needs it, but won't be the weak link that makes others get into trouble to bail her out of trouble

Date: 2007-12-19 10:54 pm (UTC)When I hear Paul talk in his own accent, I always immediately go 'oh, he must be faking that', because his Chicagga one is so natural. I think, too, because his natural accent is so proper British, that if you were going to fake a British accent, it would be the first dialect you'd go for. If that makes sense. It always makes me smile when he mentions having a 'dodgey backy' in one interview, because that's such a British thing to say.
Too often women are the 'Damsel in Distress' or the "strong selfcentered bitch' with no middle ground.
Maybe it's because I have always had very strong women around in my life and I've never been put down because of my gender, but I always find excessively feminist women annoying. Characters like Mac on JAG, or Christine Lahti's character on Chicago Hope always make me roll my eyes and go 'for God's sake, no one is being sexist towards you!'. So, I like it when you can have a woman who is independent, but not viewing men as the 'oppressors'.

Date: 2007-12-19 11:12 pm (UTC)So you remember the episode where Harm crashed into the ocean when trying to make it back for Mac and Mick's rehearsal dinner? She got so mean and defensive towards Mick when all he was trying to be was compassionate and kind. It was like she couldn't figure out a way to show emotion, that she was hurting inside, without becoming an uber-bitch.
