The DVR broke, and then the SmartTv wouldn't stream Global, so I am Elementary-less until I can figure something out. I was very frustrated trying to fix it, and Mum quietly said 'I think you should go design some houses'. She knows me too well.

On that note, have some Watson Household!

I realize as I was writing that I actually had two opposing layouts for the Watson Home, so I decided to hash it out. And went overboard as usual.

Pictures under the cut. I've tried to find a work around to photobucket's link back to albums glitch, and I think I have, but if it flutzes up, I apologize.

Character Questions Meme
1. Go here to generate 10 random numbers between 1 and 100.

2. Choose a character that I write or have written, be it a canon person (Sherlock), an OC (Dr. Forrester) or whatever. Feel free to pick a character that was used last time, as the questions will most likely be different this time around.

3. Comment with the character and the numbers, and then I will answer the corresponding questions from here

OCS and AU versions of characters are welcome.

It's been ages since I read The Golden Compass, and I didn't read the other books in the trilogy, so I don't know if this is ever established, but how does human/daemon communication work? I know humans and their own daemons talk to each other, and daemons can talk to one another, but can other humans hear/understand what your daemon is saying? Or does it just come out like random animal noises, or is it more telepathic or like a Shakespearian aside?

Apologies for the randomness of this question.

I've come to realize that I'm basically set designing with this programme. And having a really indecent amount of fun.

I've built a set for Martin Crieff's Attic. Below the cut, because I'm sure people are getting sick of these by now.

Modified from an old meme I found on my journal:

Give me the name of a character, pairing, 'verse, or story I've written, and I'll give you 3-5 facts about writing it/them. Headcanon, backstory, missing scenes, etc.

Feel free to ask for an OC.

Does anyone know the proper format for quotations within quotations within dialogue? I have a character reading from a book, and there is dialogue in the book. For example:

"Oh no!" the rabbit said.

How would you quote that in a piece of dialogue. Would it be something like:

"'"Oh no," the rabbit said,"'" Lisa read.

Or

"''Oh no,' the rabbit said,''" Lisa read.

Or something else?

While I was writing "Lost for Words", I did a whole bunch of research on head injuries, aphasia and hemiparesis. A lot of it came from the medical professional in my family, but I have a few links gathered as well, so I thought I'd share them, because someone else will probably find them useful.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether Harry Watson is an older sister or a younger sister? I can give arguments for either one, mainly that John has the responsible, caregiving nature of a stereotypical older sibling, but the show seems to be trying to parallel Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship with John and Harry's, which would make Harry older. Unless John is supposed to be the Mycroft and Harry the Sherlock.

If we go by 'canon', a newspaper that flashes up during Reichenbach puts John's age at 37, and if you add to that with the (two!) original canon theories about Watson's birthday, he'd either have just turned 37, or be about to turn 38. Which would put him at 35-36 during Series One. On John's official blog, he refers to Harry as being 36 during Series One. Which would make her either slightly older, or the same age. But I think Sherlock would have mentioned if they were twins. And canon isn't exactly brilliant with keeping itself logical. If you go by John's CV, he's 28 in Series One, which, despite Martin Freeman's spritely appearance, is stretching things a bit.

So, I guess it's basically up to me what I want to make her. She's always been older in my mind, but I was just curious to see what everyone else thought, or if I've missed something.

Before I venture out in the big scary world of The Rest of Livejournal, I thought I might inquire here to see if anyone was willing to beta/britpick or knew of a person who might be willing to beta/britpick a Sherlock story.

Story details below the cut.

Info. )

I'd be happy to write a story or make graphics or build a small shrine to anyone who volunteers. Even a few people taking a chunk of chapters would work.

So if you are someone or know of someone who is or might be willing to help, please let me know. You can comment here or PM me, or send up the Writer Signal. Whatever.

This is another opinion sort of thing, but what do you prefer when you're reading stories that have multiple parts: long chapters or short chapters? If it didn't make a difference how quickly you were able to read the story (i.e it was all posted up at once, so you could read it in one go) which would you prefer to have?

For example, I have a story that's about 9,100 words. I have two ways of dividing it up - either two chucks of approximately 4,500 words each or four, slightly lopsided chunks of 2000 to 2,500 words each. The natural breaks in the story allow for that. I suppose I could also try for three chunks of 3,000 words each.

I'll put a poll up to make it easier, but feel free to leave comments as well.

I'm writing an odd little fic that may never be posted, but the plot bunny was nibbling my brain, so I'm working on it. It's semi-based in the Time Traveller's Wife universe, and I have a question for anyone familliar with either the book or... science.

Within the structure of the 'verse, people travelling through time cannot take anything but their DNA with them--even fillings fall out of their teeth. So what would happen if a person had dyed hair? Would the dye come out when they travelled or does it somehow bond enough with the hair to remain in place? From what I can tell, only permanent hair colour gets inside the hair shaft, the rest sit on top of it, and bleach changes the structure of the hair. So I think bleach would stay in place and maybe permanent colour, but not the others?

Does any know or have an opinion on what Anderson from Sherlock's profession is? Is he an ME or SOCO? Does he do forensics? The implication in ASiP is that he was doing what John does for Sherlock at some point before John ('Anderson won't work with me' and 'I need an assistant'), so would he be the person to examine the corpse and find cause and time of death at the scene? Or is he an overall forensic investigator?

Does anyone have any thoughts on what flavour of fencing Sherlock Holmes might pursue? Foil, epée or sabre? I've done some research on wiki because I don't know much about fencing and I've watched the different types on youtube, but I'm still a bit unsure as to which one he'd prefer. I know in the original stories he is a 'singlestick' player, which seems to be a practice sword for the sabre, but the sabre fencing seems less about defense than offense and more about flying at each other and trying to hit than fending off attacks. The epée style was created to make it feel more like a 'real' duel, but the foil fencing looks to be more what a pirate would use, which we all know Sherlock wanted to be.

Anyone out there more familliar with the sport to know what would suit him best? Whatever would require the most concentration and cleverness to be good at, I suppose. Or does anyone know if it actually states anywhere which style Holmes uses in the stories?

Does anyone know if any of those Holmesian Scholars over the years have ever put forth a theory on where Holmes might have grown-up? My own Sherlock headcanon is that there's probably a fairly posh Holmes family house in the country somewhere where Mummy Holmes resides, but I don't know where to put it and I'm not familliar enough with England to make an educated guess. Any thoughts?

We have arrived at the cottage and the iPad works with the wifi, which is apparently more important than unpacking to my father. Ascii is on guard against a chipmunk invasion at the screen door and all is well.

I'm going to try to do some writing while I'm here, so I have a Doctor Who canon question. In Blink, when Billy Shipton gets sent back in time by the angels, am I right in thinking that the only reasons he couldn't be rescued by the TARDIS are that a) the Doctor and Martha didn't have it and b) he needed to live through to warn Sally? Like, could someone theoretically be sent back in time and have the Doctor come and bring them back with no ill effects, provided it didn't mess with a time locked event?

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!

I haven't been on a plane since I was a very small child and the only thing that I remember about it was that there was very good cheese. Which is not useful for the story I'm trying to write. My mum doesn't like flying, so we drove everywhere when we traveled.

Can anyone who has flown more recently let me know the rough order of things before take off? When does the safety demonstration happen? Does the captain address the plane before take off and if so, what sort of things might he/she say? Or does it happen once you're in flight? Any sort of outline would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Because [livejournal.com profile] joonscribble is an enabler:

Ask me for any character I write or have written (OCs included) and I will tell you, if they existed in the Harry Potter universe:

1. Sorting Hat: what house would they be sorted into?
2. Expecto Patronum: what form would their patronus take?
3. Riddikulus:: what form would their boggart (read: their deepest fear) take?
4. The Mirror of Erised: what would it show of their heart's desires when they looked in it?

Opinion time!

If you were updating Poirot and Hastings to fit into the Sherlock 'verse (which I am attempting, somewhat unsuccessfully to do), would you expect them to call each other Poirot and Hastings or Hercule and Arthur?

Also, The Moustache: required or not? I mean, it's sort of essential to Poirot as a character, but it's also very, very not in fashion at the moment. I can have him sport it as a sort of eccentricity (which is a Poirot thing to do), but I don't know if it works.

Thoughts, questions, concerns?

Anyone have any thoughts on whether Molly is a Miss Hooper or a Dr. Hooper? I'm assuming her official job (other than being the butt of all jokes) is an ME? Does that sound right? I've never actually seen her do anything other than stand around and stare adoringly at Sherlock, so I don't know for sure. Does she do autopsies or just, I don't know, corral bodies?

Been having fun browsing through the fake websites the BBC has set up for Sherlock's Website and John's Blog. I was just trying to figure out when to set a story in the timeline they've set up, going by John's blog post dates, but I got distracted. They've done a very clever and thorough job of creating an extended universe. All sorts of new layers to play around with. I enjoy John's posts, but the comments are the best part. Especially this one. Sherlock's forum is great, too. I like that's he's apparently gotten stroppy because John's getting more attention than him.

Molly also has a blog, but despite the cheerful kitten theme, it's quite sad.

I would love to have the job of coming up with this stuff. It's like professional fanfiction.

Not sure if this is spoilery, but just in case. )
